Transaction Marks AZC’s Entry into the Bioenergy Sector in Brazil, Strengthening Sugar and Biofuel Production
AZC Orbis Invest, a business group from Slovakia, announced the acquisition of 50% of Usina Agropéu, located in Pompéu, Minas Gerais, in a transaction that marks its entry into the bioenergy sector in Brazil.
The announcement was made on Monday, April 28, but the financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Usina Agropéu and Its Trajectory
Founded in 1981 as part of the National Alcohol Program, known as Proálcool, Usina Agropéu began operations as an independent distillery, focusing exclusively on alcohol production.

Havan will leave the shopping mall in Blumenau to inaugurate something that the chain has never done before: a megastore in half-timbered style in the Historic Center of the city, which is expected to be completed in May and change the landscape of local retail.
Over the years, the mill diversified its activities, and in 2011, it expanded its operations by building a sugar factory, capable of producing 10,000 50 kg bags per day.
This step was crucial for Agropéu to become a significant player in the sugar market, especially in a state with a strong tradition in sugarcane production like Minas Gerais.
In 2016, the mill also increased its electricity generation capacity, reaching 51.6 MW/h and selling 15 MW/h of excess.
This diversification not only improved the mill’s efficiency but also contributed to the rising demand for renewable energy sources in Brazil, which has been working to increase the share of clean energy in its energy matrix.
During the 2024/25 harvest, Agropéu faced significant challenges due to drought, which affected most days of the production cycle.
This climatic phenomenon has been an escalating concern for sugarcane producers in Minas Gerais, who, like other regions in Brazil, have faced adverse weather conditions affecting productivity.
AZC Orbis Invest: A New Era in Bioenergy
The group AZC Orbis Invest is recognized as the largest producer of biodiesel in Eastern Europe, operating in over 20 countries, including Hungary, Germany, Romania, Kazakhstan, and USA.
With the purchase of 50% of Usina Agropéu, the company is making its debut in the Americas, aiming to expand its presence in the biofuel and sugar markets.
AZC’s entry into Agropéu’s capital represents a significant strategy, allowing the company to increase its production and presence in Brazil.
The group has a strong presence in various sectors, such as transportation, distribution, fuel production, food, beverages, biofuels, construction, technology, and chemicals.
Recently, AZC also started its activities in India, signaling its ambition to expand globally.
Richard Szabó, business development director at AZC, highlighted that choosing Brazil for expansion is due to its position as “one of the most fundamental players in the sugar and biofuel sector”.
He emphasized that this operation represents a “natural and logical next step”, considering Brazil’s enormous future potential in the industry, especially in a global context where demand for biofuels and renewable energy is on the rise.
Perspectives for the Bioenergy Sector in Brazil
Brazil is one of the world leaders in bioenergy production, with extensive experience in sugarcane cultivation and ethanol production.
The country has been investing in technologies that increase the efficiency and sustainability of its mills, and the partnership with AZC may contribute to innovations and improvements at Agropéu’s production.
Geraldo Otacílio Cordeiro, CEO of Agropéu and heir of the company’s founders, commented on the partnership, stating that “with AZC’s international experience and our local strength, we will be ready to expand our operations and contribute even more to the development of sugar, ethanol, and energy production in Brazil”.
This collaboration may result in synergies that will benefit both Agropéu and AZC, enhancing their production capabilities and improving competitiveness in the market.
Consulting and Investment Impacts
The transaction involved technical-financial consulting from Datagro, which facilitated the connection between the two companies.
For Guilherme Nastari, director of the consultancy, “AZC’s investments reinforce the importance and prominence of Brazil in renewable energy production”.
This technical support is crucial to ensure that the transaction is beneficial for both parties and that Agropéu can maximize its growth potential.
Furthermore, the entry of an international investor like AZC can open doors to new market opportunities, both in Brazil and other countries, as Agropéu positions itself as a competitive and sustainable mill.
The Future of Usina Agropéu and Its Role in the Market
With the new partnership, Usina Agropéu is well-positioned to expand its production capacity and explore new opportunities in the biofuel sector.
The growing demand for renewable energy and the pressure for sustainable solutions worldwide make Brazil a strategic market for investments in bioenergy.
The combination of AZC‘s international experience with Agropéu‘s local strength promises to boost sugar, ethanol, and energy production, further consolidating Brazil’s position in the global renewable energy landscape.
With an increasing focus on sustainable farming practices and innovative technologies, Agropéu can become a success story in the sector, not only in Minas Gerais but throughout Brazil.
Furthermore, the cooperation between AZC and Agropéu can lead to sustainable development initiatives, such as social and environmental responsibility programs.
This would not only benefit the local community but also contribute to the positive image of the companies involved, aligning with growing consumer expectations for ethical and sustainable business practices.
Through the partnership, Usina Agropéu can prepare for future challenges and stand out in a constantly evolving market where innovation and sustainability are increasingly valued.
