With The Increase In Temperature And Drought, Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant Increases Energy Generation Due To High Consumption Demand
The Itaipu hydroelectric plant, located on the Paraná River, spans parts of the state of Paraná and part of Paraguay, has increased its energy generation due to drought and intense heat in various locations in Brazil. Itaipu Binacional needed to ramp up energy generation for two days – October 2 and 6. According to the hydroelectric plant, the aim of this action is to assist the country’s electrical system in the face of unforeseen demand.

The demand was to meet the National Interconnected System (SIN) during a peak of high energy consumption on days with high temperatures, during which several cities in Brazil reached 40°C also due to drought. On October 6, the plant increased its energy generation for two hours, to 1,200 megawatts. This amount is close to the total capacity of the Furnas plant in Rio Grande, in the state of Minas Gerais, which is 1,216 MW.

Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant
It is a binational hydroelectric plant located on the Paraná River, on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. When completed, it was the largest dam in the world, a title it held for 21 years until the construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China in 2003.
Itaipu Binacional, the operator of the plant, is the world leader in clean and renewable energy production, having generated more than 2.5 billion megawatt-hours (MWh) since the start of its operations.
In terms of annual energy production records, the Itaipu plant ranks first by surpassing its own previous record of 98.6 million MWh. In 2016, the Itaipu Binacional plant achieved a historic feat by producing, in a single calendar year, over 100 million MWh of clean and renewable energy. In total, in 2016, 103,098,366 MWh of energy were produced.
