Historic Energy Milestone Achieved Last Saturday by Itaipu Binacional Hydroelectric Plant Is Enough to Supply the World for 19 Hours!
Despite the water crisis Brazil is facing, between 10 AM and 2 PM last Saturday (10/9), the Itaipu plant reached the mark of 50 million MWh generated in 2021. This volume of energy would be enough to power Planet Earth for 19 hours, Brazil for a month and seven days, and Paraguay for two years and 11 months. “In a year of historical drought, Itaipu is operating at maximum efficiency,” says the Brazilian General Director of Itaipu, General João Francisco Ferreira.

According to him, a relevant factor that contributed to this generation value was Itaipu’s high productivity rate, which has been essential for the hydroelectric plant to face a year of water shortage.
Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant Achieves Best Annual Energy Index of All Time
The average annual productivity rate of Itaipu is currently at 1.0977 megawatts per cubic meter per second (MWméd/m³/s), the best annual index of all time. In July, the binational entity set a monthly productivity record, with 1.1221 MWméd/m³/s.

The high indices are possible thanks to the efforts of the binational Technical Area teams, ensuring that Itaipu meets the energy requirements of both countries as efficiently as possible, generating energy at the optimal operating point of the generating units, where water consumption is lowest.
For this to happen, it is necessary for the machines to be available for generation, which requires coordinated work between the Operation and Maintenance areas of the plant.
The Production of 50 Million MWh Is Enough to Supply:
Productivity is an index calculated by the ratio between the amount of energy generated and the flow turbine (the volume of water that has passed through the generating units, measured in cubic meters per second). It differs from production, which means the absolute amount of energy generated over a specific time period (for example, the 50 million MWh produced since the beginning of the year until now).

Itaipu
With 20 generating units and 14,000 MW of installed capacity, Itaipu Binacional is a world leader in clean and renewable energy generation, having produced, since 1984, 2.8 billion MWh. The hydroelectric plant is responsible for supplying approximately 11% of all energy consumed by Brazil and approximately 90% of Paraguay.
