USP May Finally Have a Subway Station Inside the University City Campus. The Master Plan, in Final Approval Stage, Integrates the Station into the Context of a More Accessible and Connected Campus.

Soon, the campus of the University of São Paulo (USP), one of the largest academic centers in the country, may welcome an important new feature that promises to transform the routine of students, teachers, and staff.

The construction of a subway station inside the University City, as part of the new master plan for the Butantã campus, is the major bet to facilitate access to the institution, improve integration with public transport, and offer more convenience for the community.

The proposal is bold and is already in the final stages of preparation. The project envisions that the future University of São Paulo station, integrated into the new Line 22-Brown, will be built on Professor Luciano Gualberto Avenue, near the Rectory and the Clock Square.

According to information from the Metro, this line will connect the city of Cotia, in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, to the Sumaré station in the western zone of the capital, passing through the municipality of Osasco and neighborhoods like Pinheiros.

However, Line 22-Brown is currently in the initial study phase, and there is no exact forecast for the bidding or the start of construction.

Mobility and Accessibility Plans at USP

The possibility of bringing a subway station to the USP campus has been a topic of discussion for some time.

During the construction of Line 4-Yellow, which connects important areas of São Paulo, there was an expectation that a station could be installed near the University City.

However, due to technical and feasibility difficulties, the nearest station was located on Vital Brazil Avenue, where the Butantã Station was inaugurated in 2012.

To this day, this is the closest subway stop for campus users, accessible via circular bus lines with free fares for students.

The new master plan, which is being consolidated for final approval, aims to increase internal and external accessibility to the campus, as well as include projects that promote the use of alternative transportation, such as bicycles and safe areas for pedestrians.

The proposals also highlight improvements in safety, preservation of heritage, and sustainable use of space, and all are available on the official USP website.

Line 22-Brown: A Project in Progress

The idea of constructing Line 22-Brown, which will integrate the USP campus into the subway system, was announced in 2022 by Metro.

At that time, the bidding process for the development of the line’s preliminary project was opened, and in 2023, the environmental impact study and engineering preliminary project began.

The proposal to install the University of São Paulo station was already part of the preliminary discussions for this line.

According to the Integrated Report of 2023 from Metro, this line has a complex planning process that requires several stages of study and planning.

This development has mobilized important discussions among the university community and managers, who advocate for the importance of ensuring the campus’s integration with metropolitan transport.

University Community Discusses Accessibility and Sustainability

Since September, USP has been holding public hearings to discuss the guidelines of the new master plan, which are open to both the academic community and local residents.

The forecast is that a definitive version of the project will be approved by December.

The new subway station and the guidelines of the plan are seen as a step forward in terms of mobility and sustainability, values increasingly highlighted in university policies.

The new master plan also aims to optimize the campus infrastructure, expanding the services offered and initiatives focused on sustainability and the preservation of the historical and environmental heritage of the space.

With the subway line, USP would become even more accessible and integrated into the urban context of São Paulo, facilitating users’ lives and promoting greater interaction with neighboring communities.

Now, with the possibility of Line 22-Brown, the University of São Paulo takes a new step towards modernizing the commuting experience on campus, which could mark a transformative moment for the largest university in the country.

Will USP finally get the subway station it has long desired?

“Universitários comemoram”? Quem pode comemorar são no máximo os bebês, rs. Até essa estação sair, os universitários de hoje já estarão formados há muitos anos!
