New Energy Power Emerges in Macaé (RJ) Ready to Supply 22 Brazilian States.
The energy revolution in Macaé (RJ) is about to come to life. UTE Marlim Azul, a prominent initiative from the partnership between Pátria Investimentos, Shell, and Mitsubishi Power, announces that it will soon begin its commercial operation. This remarkable project is not just a thermoelectric plant, but the forefront in converting natural gas from the pre-salt into electricity. With an initial investment of US$ 500 million, the project has created over 1,500 direct job opportunities since the start of its construction in 2020.
At its peak capacity, the plant aims for an impressive installed power of 565 MW, enough to power 2.5 million homes. This milestone positions UTE Marlim Azul to supply electricity to 25 distributors, covering a vast area of 22 states in Brazil.
An Innovative Bet on the Potential of Pre-Salt Natural Gas

The trajectory of Marlim Azul is emblematic, as it was the first project to win in the energy auctions driven by Brazil’s pre-salt natural gas. The commitment extends to the captive market, as established in an auction conducted by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) in December 2017, and deepens in the free energy contract environment, facilitated by Shell Energy Brasil S.A.
The novelty doesn’t stop there. Marlim Azul stands out as the pioneer in adopting the MHPS gas turbine with the innovative M501JAC technology in Brazilian territory. The vision is for the plant to achieve a dispatch rate above 80%, aligning with the intermittency of renewable generation and capitalizing on the reserves of pre-salt natural gas. To support this giant, the thermoelectric plant’s infrastructure incorporates 350,000 m³ of earthmoving, 17,000 m³ of structural concrete, and much more, including tons of steel, piping, and equipment.
Marlim Azul: A Synonym for Innovation and Collaboration
Emerging from the synergistic collaboration of Pátria Investimentos, Shell, and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), Marlim Azul is the materialization of the vision to convert pre-salt gas into electricity. This genuinely Brazilian treasure finds in UTE Marlim Azul, located in Macaé (RJ), the promise of full operation in 2023. Bruno Chevalier, CEO of the organization, envisions the operation of the plant as a crucial step towards a sustainable future, emphasizing pre-salt natural gas as an essential pathway for Brazil’s energy transition.
