Vale Mining Company Is Already Producing 1 Million Tons of Iron Ore Per Day, The Idea Is to Reach the Goal of 400 Million Annually

The Brazilian mining giant Vale is on track to reach its goal of producing 400 million tons of iron ore by the end of 2022 or early 2023, according to CEO Eduardo Bartolomeo during the FT Commodities Mining Summit.

In 2018, before the Brumadinho dam disaster, Vale produced 385 million tons of iron ore. For 2020, Vale has a production target between 310 million and 330 million tons.

The company said it will present the production and sales results for Q3 on Monday. According to Bartolomeo, by 2023, only 20% of the company’s capacity will be restricted by upstream dams – similar to those that collapsed in Brumadinho and Mariana.

Xikrin indigenous peoples requested the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) on Friday to halt Vale’s activities at its main iron ore mine, S11D, located in southeastern Pará, with a capacity to produce around 100 million tons of iron ore per year.

They claim they were ignored during the licensing process for the mining complex, which began operating in 2016. Approximately 1,500 members of the tribe live in the Xikrin Cateté Indigenous Land, 12 kilometers from Vale’s mine.

Vale stated that “the S11D project is regularly licensed by the Brazilian environmental agency (Ibama), complying with all conditions.”

Vale said there was no obligation to conduct a study related to the Xikrin Cateté Indigenous Land, as the mining activity is located more than 10 kilometers away from the territory they occupy.
