The market also predicts that sales of electric vehicles will reach close to 50 by the end of December

From January to November of this year, more than 43 new electrified cars were licensed.

The number of sales of electric vehicles in Brazil in 2022 has already surpassed the entire year of 2021. From January to November of this year, 43.658 cars were licensed. In the whole of last year, there were exactly 34.990 units. This corresponds to an increase of 25% so far, according to the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABV).

The market also predicts that sales of electric vehicles will reach close to 50 by the end of December, setting a record in history of 40% above 2021. In comparison with January to November 2021, 30.445 electrified cars were sold. That is, there was a significant increase of 43,4% this year until then.

Electrified cars correspond to light hybrid HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicles), plug-in hybrid electric PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) and 100% battery electric BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle). Cars + light commercial vehicles + SUV and utility vehicles. That is, these numbers do not include heavy electric vehicles, such as buses and trucks, nor very light electric vehicles, such as motorcycles, e-bikes, scooters and unicycles.

The president of ABVE, Adalberto Maluf, celebrates the sales figures for electric vehicles in Brazil, but is cautious, as the country is still far from the main markets around the world. “November sales confirm the upward trend in the light electrified market in Brazil, which has grown consistently for over three years. We have a long way to go to create a truly favorable environment for clean energy in transport in Brazil. We urgently need a National Plan in favor of electric mobility”, he puts it.

The best-selling electrified models in Brazil

The biggest highlight in the number of sales among electric vehicles in Brazil is the Corolla Cross HEV. From January to November 2022, 11.561 units were sold according to ABVE. The car can cost up to R$ 200 thousand.

In second place, with 6.453 sales, is the Corolla Altis HEV. In third place is the TIGGO 5X HEV with 1.979 registrations here in the country.

It appears, therefore, that Corolla is the majority model in sales in Brazil. And that the best selling cars are hybrids. That is, in these there are two types of motorization for operation: the engine that uses fuel and the electric one.

Deficiency in infrastructure

In the opinion of those who closely follow the movements in the electric and hybrid vehicle market, the car charging infrastructure is still precarious in Brazil. The public recharge network reached 2,8 units in the country between 2021 and 2022, one point for every 14 vehicles. The expectation is that the country will register 3 recharge addresses in the coming weeks. In the United States, public network is one gas station for every 8 cars.

Only in the last week that the Brazil received its first exclusive charging station for electric vehicles. The unit is located in the Tatuapé district, on the east side of the city of São Paulo. Generally, charging stations are located in parking lots at shopping malls, convenience centers, service stations on highways or inside conventional fuel stations.

Who manages the charging station is EZVolt. Recharging costs BRL 1,97 per kWh, and can be paid through the company's app, using a credit card or Ticket Car. The place is open 24 hours a day and has a convenience store with a self-service restaurant, snack bar and lottery.

One of the most recent initiatives that may, consequently, encourage the adoption of measures to improve the infrastructure for electric vehicles in Brazil is the alliance of 8 mobility companies that want to increase the share of the electric model, encouraging the adoption of apps by drivers. The companies are: 99, CAOA Chery, Ipiranga, Raízen, Movida, Unidas, Tupinambá Energia and Zletric.

The “Alliance for Sustainable Mobility” aims to encourage the adoption of electric models in Brazil, boost the necessary infrastructure for the electrification of the fleet, creating public charging stations; reducing barriers to the purchase of electric cars; facilitating rental by app drivers; and providing support to assemblers and other companies in the chain, such as parts suppliers.
