From January to November of This Year, More Than 43 Thousand New Electrified Cars Were Registered.

The number of electric vehicle sales in Brazil in 2022 has already surpassed the entire year of 2021. From January to November of this year, 43,658 cars were registered. In the whole of last year, there were exactly 34,990 units. This represents an increase of 25% so far, according to the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE).

The market also predicts that electric vehicle sales will approach 50 thousand by the end of December, setting a record 40% above 2021. In comparison with January to November 2021, 30,445 electrified cars were sold. In other words, there was a significant increase of 43.4% so far this year.

Electrified cars include light hybrid HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicles), plug-in hybrid electric PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles), and 100% battery electric BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle). Cars + light commercial vehicles + SUVs and utilities. Therefore, these numbers do not include heavy electric vehicles, such as buses and trucks, nor very light electric vehicles, such as motorcycles, e-bikes, scooters, and unicycles.

The president of ABVE, Adalberto Maluf, celebrates the sales numbers of electric vehicles in Brazil, but emphasizes caution, as the country is still far from the main markets worldwide. “November’s sales confirm the upward trend of the light electrified market in Brazil, which has been growing consistently for over three years. We have a long way to go to create a truly favorable environment for clean energy in transportation in Brazil. We urgently need a National Plan in favor of electric mobility,” he states.

The Best-Selling Electrified Models in Brazil

The biggest highlight in the number of sales among electric vehicles in Brazil is the Corolla Cross HEV. From January to November 2022, 11,561 units were sold according to ABVE. The car can cost up to R$ 200 thousand.

In second place, with 6,453 sales, is the Corolla Altis HEV. The third place goes to the TIGGO 5X HEV with 1,979 registrations here in the country.

It can be observed, therefore, that the Corolla is the predominant model in sales in Brazil. And that the best-selling cars are hybrids. In other words, these have two types of powertrains for operation: the engine that uses fuel and the electric motor.

Infrastructure Deficiency

In the assessment of those closely monitoring the movements of the electric and hybrid vehicle market, the charging infrastructure for cars is still inadequate in Brazil. The public charging network reached 2,800 units in the country between 2021 and 2022, being one point for every 14 vehicles. The expectation is that the country will register 3,000 charging addresses in the coming weeks. In the United States, the public network is one station for every 8 cars.

Just last week, Brazil received its first charging station exclusively for electric vehicles. The unit is located in the Tatuapé neighborhood, in the east zone of São Paulo. Typically, charging stations are found in shopping center parking lots, convenience centers, service stations on highways, or within conventional fuel stations.

The charging station is managed by EZVolt. The charging cost is R$ 1.97 per kWh, which can be paid through the company’s app, using a credit card, or Ticket Car. The location operates 24 hours and includes a convenience store with a self-service restaurant, snack bar, and lottery ticket services.

One of the most recent initiatives that can, as a consequence, encourage the adoption of measures to improve electric vehicle infrastructure in Brazil is the alliance of 8 mobility companies that aim to increase the share of electric models, encouraging adoption by app drivers. The companies are: 99, CAOA Chery, Ipiranga, Raízen, Movida, Unidas, Tupinambá Energia, and Zletric.

The “Alliance for Sustainable Mobility” aims to promote the adoption of electric models in Brazil, boost the necessary infrastructure for fleet electrification, create public charging stations; reduce barriers to purchasing electric cars; facilitate rentals by app drivers; and support automakers and other companies in the supply chain, such as parts suppliers.
