According to industry sources, Volkswagen plans to implement the new VW246 technology in the newly designed vehicle. The forecast is that the new Volkswagen Gol SUV will go into production in 2025 at the Taubaté plant in São Paulo. Still without a definitive name, the model is part of Volkswagen’s ambitious investment plan in hybrid technologies for the national market.
This news represents a potential challenge for Hyundai, whose HB20 model is currently one of the preferred SUVs among Brazilian consumers and frequently ranks among the best-selling in the country. With the introduction of the Volkswagen Gol SUV, the German automaker, which already has a solid and well-established reputation in Brazil, could significantly impact Hyundai’s sales. Therefore, Volkswagen seems to be positioning itself not only to revive a classic but to redefine the competition in the SUV segment in Brazil.
New Volkswagen Gol SUV May Support a MQB A0 Base
The new VW Gol SUV has begun having prototype exterior stamping and interior finishing parts produced by specialized suppliers, both inside and outside Brazil. The idea is to have a prototype by the end of this year.
Stamped components made of steel, such as fenders, hoods, and trunk lids, are already ready. They will be exclusive to the project, which will utilize the A and B pillars, roof, and side doors from two other products already sold by VW in Brazil, the Polo and the Nivus. This indicates that the Volkswagen Gol SUV will inherit the MQB A0 platform from both, as well as the wheelbase of 2.56 meters.
The manufacturing of these components is done on an artisanal basis, as there is currently no tooling available in the company for this. Hence the hiring of specialized suppliers. They develop parts within the established parameters virtually so that they can be applied to the prototypes and serve to generate the mass stamping molds.
New Volkswagen Gol SUV Should Feature 116 Horsepower
In the second half of next year, the automaker should reveal the name and design of the project in the style of the Renault Kardian. Although the internal nickname of the new VW Gol is not guaranteed to be used. With about 4.13 m in length and a 2.56 m wheelbase, the Gol SUV will also compete with the Fiat Pulse, priced between R$ 100 thousand and R$ 130 thousand. The Nivus will be positioned to compete in a range of up to R$ 150 thousand.
Thus, the project of the new Volkswagen Gol is expected to be sold with two different calibrations of the 1.0 TSI three-cylinder 12V turbo flex engine with direct injection from the EA211 family: the first, with 109 horsepower on gasoline and 116 horsepower on ethanol, generating 16.8 kgfm of torque, coming from the Polo. The second, with 116 horsepower on gasoline and 128 horsepower on ethanol, generating 20.4 kgfm, inherited from the Nivus, Virtus, and T-Cross.
