The Production of a New Electric SUV by Volkswagen Is Part of the Strategic Goal to Launch Ten New Electric Cars by 2026

The automaker Volkswagen announced the production of a new SUV-style vehicle that will be powered entirely by an electric motor, taking advantage of the fact that the market for small electric SUVs is rapidly expanding in several countries around the world.

“Working hard to develop an additional compact SUV based on the ID 3 so that we can also launch a Volkswagen product in this fast-growing vehicle segment,” said Volkswagen’s CEO in an interview.

The new model will be an addition to the lineup, which currently consists of the ID.4 and ID.5 models, and production is expected to start in 2026.

The project for the new electric SUV from Volkswagen comes with an updated version of the MEB platform that has been named MEB+. This upgrade will allow for greater range and faster charging rates compared to the electric models from Volkswagen currently on the market.

The new electric model will have dimensions comparable to the combustion engine model, the Tiguan. The range may reach close to 700 Km, with charging powers from 175 to 200 kW.

According to Schafer’s statements, all of this is part of the strategic goal to launch ten new electric cars by 2026. If successful, this will allow Volkswagen to have the largest portfolio of EVs available in the automotive industry.

Its production is included in the modernization plan for the Wolfsburg factory in Germany, which is located at the brand’s headquarters. Approximately 460 million euros will be invested in the plant starting in early 2025.

The goal is to update Wolfsburg and prepare it for the manufacturing of Volkswagen vehicles, including the electric SUV, which will only begin this year when it starts producing the updated version of the ID.3, which will also be electric.
