Company Issued 1.4 Million RECs in Brazil and Strengthens Its Performance in Renewable Energy.
Voltalia led the Brazilian renewable energy certificate market in 2024.
According to the site MegaWhat, published on March 26, 2025, the company issued 1.4 million REC Brazil over the year, according to data from Instituto Totum.
The brand consolidated the role of Voltalia as one of the protagonists in the clean energy and carbon market sector in the country.

The Economist states that Brazil has a “secret weapon” against expensive oil and highlights how the country can reduce economic impacts even in international scenarios of high volatility.
Certification Recognizes Renewable Origin of Energy
The RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates) certify that the energy generated is from a renewable source.
In the case of REC Brazil, the certificates follow the international iREC criteria but also include a sustainability supplement based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Therefore, each unit sold carries not only the environmental value but also the commitment to social and ecological impact in the served regions.
Additionally, all Voltalia projects are certified for this model and meet at least five different SDGs.
Large Companies Buy RECs from Voltalia
Among the main buyers of the RECs issued by Voltalia in 2024 are Braskem, Itaú, and Leroy Merlin.
These companies use the certificates to offset their carbon emissions, while also reinforcing their alignment with their corporate sustainability strategies.
According to Voltalia itself, the success of the issuances is tied to long-term contracts and strategic partnerships, which allowed the company to market 100% of its production.
With the high demand for RECs in Brazil, the company began to keep pace with the growth of the national market, expanding its role in the emissions offset segment.
GAS-REC Certificates Also Gain Importance
In addition to electricity RECs, the article also highlights the role of GNR Fortaleza in the GAS-RECs market, aimed at renewable generation with biomethane.
The plant, a partnership between Marquise Ambiental and MDC Energia, was the one that issued and retired the most GAS-RECs in 2024.
Between 2021 and 2023, the plant generated nearly 3 million MMBTU, of which over 1.6 million were sold and nearly 900 thousand have already been retired by early 2024.
Each certificate equals 1 million BTU or 0.29 MWh of renewable energy generated from biomethane.
According to Instituto Totum, auditors check, register, and “retire” the certificates after use, ensuring that consumers have effectively utilized the renewable gas, preventing its resale.
This process is essential for companies to demonstrate concrete actions of decarbonization and sustainability.
