Much speculation has surrounded the future of Walmart in Brazil. Just over a year ago, the investment company Advent International announced the acquisition of 80% of the Brazilian operations of the American chain, leading to a series of rumors dominating discussions among experts, ranging from a possible entry of Amazon into the business to a complete transformation of the existing stores in the country.

The Walmart has finally announced what it will do with its operation in Brazil. The first change will be the brand name, followed by a focus on cash and carry, a sector aimed at selling at lower prices than those found in hypermarkets and supermarkets.
Grupo Big currently has 550 stores and 50,000 employees in 18 Brazilian states. “Walmart hypermarket stores in the South and Southeast regions will be renamed Big, while in the Northeast, all hypermarkets will be Big Bompreço,” the company stated in a press release. “By June 2020, the expectation is to complete the renovation of 100 hypermarkets,” the company concluded.
According to the same release, the Sam’s Club brand will have 10 new stores within a year, with the first set to open in the coming weeks. Three more will open by the end of 2019.
Simply by using the name, the company has to pay monthly royalties to the Americans, owners of the Walmart brand, of 0.7% of sales. With the change, this obligation is canceled.
Founded in 1995, Grupo Big is established in the Brazilian market. Walmart has never taken off in Brazil, failing to surpass third place in the Brazilian retail ranking. The chain’s operation in the country has been marked by store closures, changes in leadership, and constant losses.
Even episodes of corruption have been recorded. The company paid US$ 282 million in fines for failing to act to prevent the practice of illicit acts in Brazil, Mexico, India, and China. In Brazil, Walmart informed the U.S. Department of Justice that it had made improper payments to government officials as a quid pro quo to facilitate store construction.
