The announcement took place last Tuesday during a virtual meeting that brought together the mayor of Linhares, Guerino Zanon, the governor Renato Casagrande, the Senior Vice President of Olam, Sathyamurthy Mayilswamy, the president of Olam’s coffee division in Brazil, Jerônimo Pereira, and the company’s director in Espírito Santo, Fabrício Tristão, along with the state secretary of Development, Thyago Hoffmann.
The choice of Linhares to host the company is anchored by the fact that Espírito Santo is considered the largest producer of conilon coffee in the country, the main raw material for the production of instant coffee. Out of the 15 million sacks produced in Brazil, Espírito Santo is responsible for 66% of all national production, or 10 million sacks. Of this total, the northern and northwestern regions of the state produce 7.5 million sacks.

The largest tunnel module factory in the world was built from scratch on a beach in Denmark to produce 89 concrete blocks and will be demolished after the project: each structure weighs up to 10 times the Eiffel Tower and will be installed on the bottom of the Baltic Sea with an accuracy of 12 millimeters in a tunnel that will halve the travel time between Hamburg and Copenhagen.
Another decisive factor for the installation of Olam is the water availability of the municipality (the Rio Doce aquifer), a fundamental point for the production process of instant coffee.
Job Creation in Espírito Santo
The construction of the factory will create around a thousand job openings in the state of Espírito Santo. In the construction phase, which is expected to take two years, up to 700 workers will be employed. In the industry operation, which should start in 2023, 250 jobs will be generated.
In the construction phase, positions will be needed for mason, painter, welder, mechanic, technical assistant, engineer, as well as in administrative and operational areas.
The Secretary of Economic Development of Linhares, Luiz Fernando Lorenzoni, highlighted that the municipality adopts an adequate strategy for attracting investments and organized management that expands, strengthens, modernizes and diversifies the economy of the municipality.
“The commitment to generating jobs, income, and new opportunities is being fulfilled. Olam is a large group, with global operations, and will certainly significantly contribute to strengthening the local economic dynamics while further integrating the coffee chain. We are very pleased with this additional investment,” he said.
Largest Export Center for Instant Coffee in the World
“We welcomed the representatives of Café Olam at Findes in February. They came to discuss the start of construction but had restrictions on the official announcement, which we can only comment on now. Today, Espírito Santo represents 7% of Brazil’s instant coffee exports. In two years, it will represent 27%, and in five years, it will be more than 45%. Thus, Espírito Santo will become the largest export center for instant coffee in the world in five years. This is very important for the industry in Espírito Santo and the country and opens many business and job opportunities in the region, where we also forecast port expansions,” emphasized Cris Samorini, President of the Federation of Industries of Espírito Santo (Findes).
Olam International
Founded in 1989, Olam is a leader in food and agribusiness, operating across the entire value chain in more than 60 countries, supplying various products to over 19,800 customers worldwide, and has achieved leadership positions in many of its businesses, such as Cocoa, Coffee, Cotton, Edible Nuts, and Spices.
Olam Coffee has been operating in Espírito Santo since 2005, working with the export of all coffee qualities. In 2012, it opened its own warehouse in Nova Venécia, focusing on the commercialization of Conilon, and the unit in Muniz Freire, aimed at the export of Arabica coffee.
