The Federal Government decided to zero the import tax on over 109 solar energy generation equipment, such as photovoltaic inverters, static converters and shock absorbers used for panels that follow the movement of the sun. Bolsonaro inaugurates solar power plant in Goiás and guarantees that “the sun will not be taxed”

The movement came from the Executive Management Committee of the Chamber of Commerce last Thursday (27/08) and includes several products. The inclusion of the new items in the list of solar energy products exempt from import tax as ex-tariffs will take effect as of August 1st.

The measure to continue the elimination of taxes on other solar energy components, announced in July and, came to help boost business at the moment of the crisis caused by the new Coronavirus, in which the devaluation of the real against the dollar increases costs of components for generation with the technology, which depends mainly on imports from China.

On the other hand, the few companies that manufacture solar energy equipment in Brazil may see their competitiveness pressured against imports, which traditionally already have advantages in terms of costs.

However, the country still has another 3,4 gigawatts in distributed production, in cases where there is, for example, the use of solar panels at home. According to Aneel, the sector has shown strong growth here, both in large plants and for domestic installation.

Even so, solar energy currently represents just under 2% of the capacity in operation in Brazil, according to data from Agency Nacional de Energia Elétrica (Aneel), with enormous potential for expansion in the coming decades.
