After a Year and a Half Using Newly Installed Cummins Engines, Blaine and Janice Decided to Remove the Entire Propulsion System from the Abandoned 24-Meter Superyacht in Alaska to Install Hybrid Electric Engines, Fully Emptying the Compartment and Starting a New Structural Phase

Blaine and Janice are exchanging new engines for hybrid propulsion in an abandoned 24-meter superyacht in Alaska, after a year and a half of use, removing the entire previous system to modernize the Tangaroa and reduce emissions.

Superyacht Undergoes Complete Propulsion Swap After Initial Restoration

The couple acquired the Tangaroa, an abandoned superyacht, believing they would embark on a dream journey that would lead them to hybrid energy. However, the restoration process took longer than expected, requiring ongoing work to restore the vessel to its former glory.

Under the superyacht’s body, two new Cummins engines had been installed. Even so, Blaine and Janice decided to move forward with additional modernization, opting for hybrid-electric engines in place of the previous system.

The decision had been planned for a long time. After a year and a half with the old engines, they felt it was the right time to make the replacement and prepare the superyacht for the future.

Video Records Engine Removal and Compartment Emptying

A video published on February 4, 2026, shows the team removing the old engines and completely emptying the engine compartment. The process includes the removal of batteries, transformers, and smaller generator engines.

The intervention requires the complete removal of all components from the previous system. According to the video record, the operation is not simple and requires careful technical coordination.

The removal of the new engines from the superyacht represents a significant step in the transition to the hybrid system, considered an advancement towards the modernization of the vessel.

Hybrid Superyacht Promises Quiet Operation and Fewer Emissions

With the new configuration, the Tangaroa is expected to operate quietly, providing more peaceful journeys aboard the superyacht. The hybrid propulsion will also allow for lower emissions compared to diesel engines.

The modernization is part of the plan to transform the abandoned superyacht into a hybrid vessel, as envisioned by the couple since the acquisition.

The expectation is that the superyacht will sail with its new hybrid propulsion after the completion of the ongoing technical phases.

Logistical Challenges Marked Engine Removal

The removal of the old engines was not a simple task. To increase the complexity, the crane hired to remove the engines arrived a day earlier than expected.

With the rain arriving, it was necessary to speed up preparations and race against time to get everything ready. The first locomotive, named Stella, was slowly hoisted through the upper hatch to solid ground.

The second engine, from Porsche, posed greater complexity in removal but was also taken out of the superyacht. There were still other items to be launched, but the phase represented a significant advancement in the project.

The replacement solidifies the goal of building the hybrid vessel planned since the beginning of the restoration. The superyacht, once abandoned in Alaska, continues to undergo transformation towards its new phase of propulsion.
