The Project 11442M nuclear-powered heavy cruiser Admiral Nakhimov has begun its long-awaited sea trials. After years of repairs and modernization, the Russian Navy giant returns with an updated arsenal and cutting-edge technologies, promising to redefine the country's naval power.

According to information provided to TASS by sources in the shipbuilding industry, the nuclear cruiser has been moved to the degaussing station, which is a preparatory stage for the main phase of testing. During this process, the operational conditions of key systems such as the main power installation, steering, navigation, sonar and radio communications will be checked. These initial tests are the first step towards returning the Admiral Nakhimov to active service.

The return of a legend of the seas

The Admiral Nakhimov, which is part of the legendary Kirov class, has been under repair since 1999. However, the practical modernization work The construction work began only in 2013. The ship was initially expected to be delivered to the fleet in 2022, but schedule delays have prolonged the project. With the completion of this stage, the expectation is that the heavy nuclear cruiser will once again be a key part of the Russian Navy.

The cruiser now carries new air defense systems, including the advanced 9K96 Redut and the 42S6 Morpheus short-range missile system, as well as universal launchers UKSK 3S14, capable of operating modern missiles such as the Caliber, Onyx and Zircon. In anti-submarine operations, the Nakhimov will rely on the Packet-NK complex and the Answer missile system. In artillery, the most notable are the 190 mm A-100 universal cannon and the 630 mm AK-30 automatics.

In addition, the ship's radar and control systems received a significant upgrade, such as the Fregat-M-2EM three-dimensional radar and the Puma-02 SUAO weapons control system, consolidating the cruiser as a cutting-edge technological platform.

The Kirov-class cruisers, renowned for their size and firepower, marked the Cold War era as one of the Soviet Union's greatest displays of naval power. Designed to counter the supremacy of U.S. aircraft carriers, these giants combine nuclear propulsion with oil-fired boilers, offering impressive operational range and high speed.

Among the four Kirov-class ships built, Admiral Nakhimov is poised to bolster the Russian fleet with a renewed arsenal and high-seas power projection capabilities, reaffirming the strategic importance of nuclear-powered heavy cruisers for the country's defense and deterrence.

With the heavy nuclear cruiser 'Admiral Nakhimov' about to resume operations, the Russian Navy not only reinforces its presence in the oceans, but also keeps alive the legacy of one of the most imposing classes in naval history.

If you put it in the Black Sea, it will meet the same fate as the other “powerful” ones when it encounters the Ukrainian aquatic drones.
