Norte Energia Invests R$ 11 Million in Pilot Project That Combines Solar Power, Supercapacitors, and Cutting-Edge Technology to Regulate the Frequency of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant, Marking a New Advance in Brazilian Energy Innovation.
The Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant, located in the Xingu River basin in Pará, is preparing to receive one of the most innovative projects in the national electricity sector. Norte Energia announced an investment of R$ 11 million in a frequency regulation system based on the integration between solar photovoltaic storage and supercapacitors.
The project is part of a Research, Development, and Innovation (R&D&I) program financed by the company and conducted by the Guamá Foundation for Science, Technology, Innovation, and Sustainable Development, through the Center of Excellence in Energy Efficiency of the Amazon (Ceamazon). The initiative reinforces the importance of solar energy as a strategic ally of the Brazilian electric matrix, especially in regions with great water and solar potential, such as the Amazon.
Solar Storage with Supercapacitors Promises Efficiency and Stability
The pilot project includes the installation of a solar photovoltaic plant alongside the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant and the creation of a supercapacitor bank that will allow the storage of the generated energy. This structure will be responsible for assisting in the regulation of electrical frequency, an essential function to ensure system stability and avoid operational failures.

Piauí reaches a historic milestone in energy transition: State records nearly 160,000 households powered by solar energy and leads growth in the Northeast.
Furthermore, the plan includes the development of a computational platform for operators and an online monitoring system with reports and statistics in real-time. The goal is to enhance the efficiency of energy management and provide technical and scientific data that can guide future public policies aimed at energy transition.
According to the company, the combined use of hydro and solar sources creates a more resilient and sustainable model, capable of responding quickly to load and generation variations, typical of systems with high presence of intermittent sources, such as wind and solar.
Norte Energia Bets on Innovation to Modernize the Electricity Sector
According to Norte Energia, the new system arises in response to changes in the profile of the Brazilian electricity sector, which increasingly relies on renewable and variable generation sources. This evolution demands intelligent solutions to maintain balance and reduce wear on equipment from large hydropower plants.
For Emília Tostes, coordinator of Ceamazon, the project represents a milestone in the technological development of the country:
“The project is innovative and will be a landmark in frequency regulation of large-scale hydraulic generation with integration of intermittent sources, such as photovoltaic and wind, significantly impacting the national electric system.”
The expectation is that the results will serve as a basis for new scientific research, improvements in the operation of the national system, and policies to encourage energy innovation.
Norte Energia’s proposal goes beyond technical development: it seeks to create a more intelligent and sustainable operational model, capable of integrating different energy sources in harmony. The combination of solar energy and hydraulic generation at Belo Monte is seen as a decisive step for the advancement of modernization in the electricity sector and energy efficiency in Brazil.
With this initiative, the company consolidates its leadership role in projects that combine technology, sustainability, and innovation, demonstrating how the strategic use of solar energy can contribute to a cleaner and more stable energy future.
