Recent discoveries suggest that monstrous waves, capable of reaching impressive heights, and the unstable Gulf Stream may be responsible for the mysterious disappearances of vessels and aircraft in the Bermuda Triangle.
For decades, the Bermuda Triangle has fueled the imagination of curious people, scientists and conspiracy theorists. Missing planes, ships that never reached their destination and scenes worthy of movies. After all, what really happens in that region of the Atlantic?
Recently, a scientific discovery brought a new perspective on the enigma. Simon Boxall, an oceanographer at the University of Southampton, believes the answer may lie in the powerful natural forces at work in the Bermuda Triangle.
What is the Bermuda Triangle?
The Bermuda Triangle is an area that connects points between Miami, Puerto Rico and Bermuda. Since the mid-20th century, it has been famous for reports of unexplained disappearances of ships and aircraft.

Among the most famous cases is the disappearance of Flight 19, a group of US Navy bombers, in 1945. Since then, theories ranging from alien abductions to portals to another dimension have circulated about the site.
Gigantic waves
One of the most recent explanations comes from the study of giant waves, known as monster waves. These formations, capable of reaching twice the size of normal waves, can be devastating.
Simon Boxall explained on Channel 5’s The Bermuda Triangle Enigma how these waves could be created by the interaction of storms north and south of the Triangle. “If more storms coming from Florida come together, it could create waves with immense destructive potential,” he said.
Imagine a wall of water as tall as a building. These waves could easily swallow ships whole, leaving little to no evidence.
The Gulf Stream and its death traps
Another natural factor that appears to contribute to the mystery is the Gulf Stream, a powerful ocean current that runs through the Bermuda Triangle.
Not only does this current rapidly change weather conditions, it can also create dangerous eddies and areas of instability in the sea. Many of the reported disappearances coincide with regions where the Gulf Stream is most active, suggesting it could be a key piece of the puzzle.
Demystifying conspiracies
While scientific explanations are compelling, conspiracy theories continue to attract followers. From anomalous magnetic fields to alien abductions, supernatural stories seem to defy logic.
Why does this happen? Perhaps because the mystery, when wrapped in fiction, becomes more fascinating. However, for many experts, phenomena such as giant waves and the Gulf Stream already offer sufficiently plausible explanations for what happens in the Bermuda Triangle.
Despite scientific advances, the Bermuda Triangle still holds secrets. The conditions Unpredictable sea and weather conditions, combined with the lack of accurate historical data on some incidents, make it difficult to reach a definitive conclusion.
But perhaps that is what keeps the fascination alive. After all, mystery has the power to intrigue us, make us imagine and, of course, keep us curious.
