The F-39 Gripen Assembled in Brazil Will Be Presented in Gavião Peixoto and Marks an Industrial Advance by the FAB, with a Line at Embraer and Technology Transfer from Saab.
The first F-39 Gripen assembled in Brazil is scheduled to be presented on March 25 at Embraer’s factory in Gavião Peixoto, in the interior of São Paulo, and it should be showcased to the public as a milestone in the local production of the FAB’s fighter program.
The aircraft is part of the contracted fleet of 36 units and is making headlines for its supersonic performance, an estimated range of nearly 4,000 kilometers, and its ability to deploy the Meteor air-to-air missile, one of the most advanced long-range vectors in service.
F-39 Gripen Program in the FAB and Delivery Schedule
According to the latest planning disclosed in industry documents and reports, the delivery schedule has been extended, with the expectation that the batch will be completed by 2032, following revisions that prolonged the execution of the contract signed in 2014.

Currently, the FAB maintains ten Gripen fighters in training from the Anápolis Air Base in Goiás, while another unit is involved in industrial activities and testing in Gavião Peixoto, where the final assembly structure operates.
Up to this stage, the aircraft delivered to Brazil were produced in Sweden and transported by ship, and the transition to national assembly has depended on a training cycle that involved hundreds of Brazilian professionals in different phases.
Embraer and Saab in the Assembly of the Gripen in Gavião Peixoto

The production line for the F-39 in Gavião Peixoto was inaugurated in May 2023, in a ceremony with civilian and military authorities, and Saab classified the moment as a milestone in the technology transfer program associated with the project.
According to information released by the federal government at the time, the partnership provides for local production of part of the Brazilian batch, with the participation of engineers and technicians from the country, in a line described as the only Gripen production outside Sweden.
This industrial arrangement, in addition to supporting the assembly of aircraft for the FAB, is also presented as a long-term investment in skills, as the integration of systems and the training of specialized labor require continuity and successive validation cycles.
Testing, Armament Integration, and Operation Thor
In the weeks leading up to the presentation, the Gripen program in Brazil continues to focus on safety testing and integration, including campaigns aimed at validating the employment of armaments, a necessary step to clear the fighter for different mission profiles.
In Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, the FAB reported conducting tests and operational activities with the F-39 involving the evaluation of ammunition employment and safe separation procedures, a process that seeks to ensure predictability of the armament’s behavior in flight.
Meteor Missile on the Gripen and Long-Range Firepower
The capability to fire the Meteor gained prominence after the FAB itself registered, in November 2025, the first launch of the missile by the F-39E Gripen, during an activity carried out at the Natal Air Base, with an airborne target used in the exercise.
The Air Force also linked the actual launch of the Meteor to the advancement towards the full operational capability of the Gripen in the country, alongside other certifications, such as procedures and validations related to aerial refueling and the fighter’s employment package.
Mach 2 Speed, Range, and F414G Engine
In public materials and descriptions about the model in operation in Brazil, the Gripen is presented as a supersonic fighter capable of reaching Mach 2, with an engine from the F414 family that can deliver 22,000 pounds of thrust with afterburner, according to Saab.
In addition to speed, the aircraft is described as having in-flight refueling capability and improved range compared to earlier versions, a point that appears in technical explanations provided in reports and statements when the FAB details the evolution process of the system.

Although the value of 4,000 kilometers frequently cited refers to estimates of range under specific transit conditions, the FAB usually emphasizes that the actual profile depends on the type of mission, the cargo carried, and the need for logistical support.
Public Display and Impact on Air Defense Modernization
The ceremony on March 25 is likely to serve as a showcase of the industrial stage reached, as it shifts the focus from receiving ready aircraft to the capability to assemble, integrate, and test the fighter in Brazilian territory, under technical supervision.
At the same time, the public display occurs while the schedule remains extended, and the operational challenge continues to balance training, certifications, and fleet availability, in a process that tends to be gradual until the full maturity of a new platform.
With the Meteor already launched in real operations and national assembly progressing towards the showcase in March, what practical effects will the FAB be able to demonstrate in the short term in terms of readiness, number of available aircraft, and pace of pilot qualifications?
