With the capacity to process 225 thousand barrels of oil and 12 million m³ of gas per day, the largest oil platform in Brazil begins operations in the Búzios Field and can take national production to unprecedented levels!
Brazil has just put into operation the country's largest offshore oil platform: the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré. Located in the Búzios Field, in the Santos Basin, the gigantic platform ship has the capacity to process up to 225 barrels of oil and 12 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. To give you an idea, this daily production is equivalent to almost 10% of the country's entire oil demand.
The platform will operate 15 wells, seven of which are oil producers, six are water and gas injectors, one is a convertible well and one is a gas injector. All this connected through a sophisticated underwater infrastructure, which allows the extraction and transportation of oil thousands of meters deep.
The potential of the Búzios Field in the pre-salt layer
The Brazilian pre-salt layer is one of the largest oil reserves in the world, hidden beneath layers of rock at depths of between 5 and 7 meters. Within this region, the Búzios Field stands out as one of the most promising areas. According to Petrobras, the site could become the company's largest production field, with the potential to exceed 1,5 million barrels per day in the coming years.

Almirante Tamandaré is a key player in achieving this milestone. By the second half of 2025, the Búzios Field is expected to reach production of 1 million barrels per day, consolidating the importance of the new platform in the national energy scenario.
Technology and sustainability in oil exploration
In addition to its high production capacity, Brazil's largest oil platform features technological innovations that reduce its environmental impact. The unit has decarbonization systems to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and heat recovery technologies that optimize energy consumption on board.
This represents a significant advance in the oil and gas sector, which seeks balance production growth with more sustainable practices. According to Petrobras, these measures ensure greater efficiency and reduce the need for additional energy, contributing to a cleaner extraction process.
Impact of the new platform on national production
The start of operations at Almirante Tamandaré is not only a technological milestone, but also a major step towards strengthening oil production in Brazil. The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, highlighted that the unit represents a strategic advance, as it produces more while using fewer resources and generating less environmental impact.
The new platform was chartered from SBM Offshore, the company that provided the technology needed for its construction. The unit exceeds the average capacity of most platforms in the world, which is generally around 150 barrels of oil per day and compression of 10 million cubic meters of gas.
Discovery of new reserves in the Santos Basin
The good news didn't stop there. One day before the start of operations at Almirante Tamandaré, Petrobras identified new oil reserves in the western region of the Búzios Field, in a well drilled at a depth of 1.940 meters.
This discovery further strengthens Brazil's position in the global oil market and could result in a future increase in production, consolidating the country among the world's leading oil exporters.
