Indicators of Safety, Longevity, and Development Highlight São Caetano do Sul in ABC Paulista, with Significant Decrease in Vehicle Thefts, Highlights in Rankings Focused on the Elderly and Good Performance in Quality of Life Metrics, According to Public Research and Databases.
São Caetano do Sul, a municipality in ABC Paulista neighboring the capital, has indicators that grab attention in safety, health, and quality of life, according to public databases and official reports that compile statistics from the state and the municipality.
Recent data released by the municipal administration, referencing records from the São Paulo government, indicate zero homicides in 2025 and a significant drop in property crimes, while development and longevity rankings place the city among the best-rated in the country.
Crime Statistics and Reading the Statistics
In comparing April 2024 and April 2025, São Caetano do Sul recorded a reduction of 72.73% in vehicle thefts, decreasing from 11 to 3 occurrences, according to research published based on official statistics from the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat.

In the same monthly comparison, the publication also reports a drop of 45.65% in general thefts, a trend that local authorities typically associate with integrated patrol actions, camera monitoring, and the collaboration of municipal teams with state forces.

Still in 2025, statements from the city hall claim that crimes classified as serious, such as homicide, remained unreported in the municipality during certain periods of the year, again citing the statistical consolidation released by the State of São Paulo.
On the other hand, the statement that the city has not registered homicides “since 2023” and the total of “two cases in eight years” require direct consultation of complete historical series by municipality, something that was not entirely verifiable in the public sources accessed here.
Longevity in Highlight and Strength of the Health System
On the longevity front, the Institute of Longevity released in 2023 the edition of the Urban Development Index for Longevity (IDL) and ranked São Caetano do Sul at the top, by evaluating the preparedness of municipalities for the population aged 60 and over.
The methodological description of the IDL highlights that, among the health criteria, the municipality is well positioned in number of beds, professionals with higher education, and volume of hospital procedures, indicators used by the index to compare capacity for care.
In addition to the IDL picture, data from the Human Development Atlas indicate that life expectancy at birth in São Caetano do Sul was estimated at 78.20 years in 2010, above the level of many Brazilian municipalities in the same decade.
The city hall, when presenting policies aimed at the elderly population, also mentions life expectancy of 78.2 years and describes a network of services and care centers for people over 60, with health actions and social activities.
HDI, IDHM, and Education in the National Scenario
When the focus is on human development, the most consolidated data available for municipalities remains the IDHM calculated based on the 2010 Census, and in it, São Caetano do Sul appears in 1st place in Brazil, with an index of 0.862.

This result contrasts with the claim that the municipality would have the 7th best HDI in the country, information that does not correspond to the ranking published by the UNDP for 2010 and, therefore, needs to be treated as incorrect in this context.
In education, the city hosts the Municipal University of São Caetano do Sul (USCS), an institution that offers on-site and distance degrees, as well as high school and other modalities, according to the university itself on its institutional channels.
The claim that the municipality would be “number one in the ranking of students who study the most in the country” depends on a specific source and clear methodology, which was not securely located in official national databases during the review.
Parks, Culture, and Leisure in São Caetano do Sul
In everyday life, part of the municipality’s attractiveness can be explained by the concentration of leisure areas and cultural facilities in a small and urbanized territory, which facilitates movements and increases access to outdoor activities.
Among the most cited points by residents are the Chico Mendes Green Space, with lakes and walking paths, and the People’s Grove, used for sports practices and pedestrian circulation at different times of the day.
The cultural agenda also serves as a calling card, with the Paulo Machado de Carvalho Theater hosting local shows and events, while the Municipal Historical Museum gathers collections and initiatives aimed at preserving the city’s memory.
Completing this circuit is Di Thiene Square, known as a socializing area, and other neighborhood spaces that function as extensions of everyday leisure, generally associated with the feeling of a compact city with nearby services.
