A Smart Device Developed In Brazil Reminds Automatically The Medication Times, Registers The Intake And Allows Remote Monitoring Of Elderly, Chronic Patients And High-Cost Medications.
With the increase in the continuous use of medications among the elderly, the risk of forgetting or making an error in dosages becomes a serious challenge. The National Health Survey (PNS) of 2019, conducted by IBGE in partnership with the Ministry of Health, indicates that failures in treatment adherence can lead to serious health consequences.
To tackle this problem, pharmacist Fernando Bizerra developed the startup RenovatioMed and created a smart device that organizes medications, monitors intake, and automatically sends data to family members and healthcare professionals.
“Our focus is to prevent forgetfulness and avoid errors in medication administration,” explains Bizerra, emphasizing the practicality of the device, which does not depend on direct interaction with the application by the patient or caregiver.

How Does The Smart Device Work?
The organizer holds all the medications for a week, allowing for up to four different times a day. During the correct time, the little containers turn green and the device emits sound and light alerts.
When the medication is taken, the information is captured automatically.
If the patient tries to access a medication outside of the scheduled time, red LEDs light up and the event is recorded for analysis by the healthcare team.
According to Bizerra, “we automatically capture access to the medications by the organizer itself, ensuring safety in treatment.”
Benefits For Family Members And Healthcare Professionals
The system allows real-time monitoring through the application.
Family members can check if the patient is taking the medications correctly and receive notifications if any medication is missed for more than 45 minutes.
For clinics, hospitals, and health plan operators, the platform offers a complete view of the patients, allowing precise adjustments in treatment and greater control over adherence and routine.
Most Common Use Cases
The smart device is especially useful in three situations:
- Home monitoring of elderly and chronic patients;
- Patients starting new treatments after surgeries or medical procedures;
- Control of high-cost medications, such as oral chemotherapeutics.
An example mentioned by Bizerra involves a diabetic patient whose blood sugar control was compromised: “With the device, we were able to confirm 100% adherence to the treatment, allowing for safe adjustments in medications,” he reports.
Results And Feedback From Users
Users highlight the practicality and safety provided by the device.
“The system improved the routine of the entire family, functioning without interruptions or defects for more than two years,” says the pharmacist, emphasizing the robustness of the device.
During the validation phase, tests conducted with Unimed confirmed the effectiveness of the device, consolidating the technology as a market-ready product.
Availability Of The New Smart Device For Elderly
RenovatioMed offers the device in a monthly rental model, including technical support and access to the application.
Currently, about 50 patients are using the system, which serves both individual clients and health plan operators.
Headquartered in the Technology Innovation Park of São José dos Campos, the startup now plans to expand sales throughout Brazil, promoting more safety and autonomy for the elderly and chronic patients through the smart device.
