Son of a Domestic Worker and Mason, Young Man from Bahia Takes First Place in Medicine at USP After Intense Study Routine with Free Materials and Donations, Gains National Exposure with Approval Video and Seeks Financial Support to Stay in Full-Time Course Outside the State.

The 23-year-old from Bahia, Wesley de Jesus Batista, was approved in first place in the Medicine course at the University of São Paulo, at the Ribeirão Preto campus, using his Enem score through Sisu.

Living in Cajazeiras, a popular neighborhood in Salvador, he studied with donated materials, reused handouts, and free classes available on the internet, primarily on YouTube.

With the move to the interior of São Paulo, the student and his family are now organizing a crowdfunding campaign to cover basic expenses during his full-time undergraduate studies.

The moment Wesley discovers the result was captured on video and began circulating on social media.

In the footage, he looks for the course name on the list of approved candidates, confirms his ranking, and reacts emotionally when realizing he has secured first place.

The recording was shown on news programs and helped to increase the visibility of his case.

The spot he secured is for Medicine at USP Ribeirão Preto, a course considered one of the most competitive in the country.

The admission occurred through the Unified Selection System, which exclusively uses the Enem score to allocate spots in public universities.

In interviews, Wesley reported that he structured his preparation to overcome deficiencies in public education.

Instead of attending a private preparatory course, he created his own schedule and progressed gradually through the required content.

According to the student, the strategy was to maintain regularity and organization, even with limited resources.

To enable his studies, he relied on books and handouts obtained through donations, in addition to free online materials.

The video lessons published on open platforms became a central part of his routine, complemented by exercises and materials found online for review.

Study Routine and Family Background

Describing the preparation period, Wesley stated that he maintained an intense routine, starting his activities early in the morning.

According to the student himself, his day usually began around 5 AM, and at times, studying extended late into the night.

Son of a domestic worker and a mason, he grew up in a low-income family.

In public statements, he associates his achieved results with continuous effort and family support within financial limitations.

His social background began to be highlighted in reports covering the approval.

Wesley is presented as a resident of the periphery of Salvador who prepared for the entrance exam without access to paid preparatory courses.

Living Costs and Crowdfunding to Study

Although USP is a public university, the student claims that costs outside the classroom pose a challenge.

Expenses mentioned include housing, food, transportation, and the purchase of materials.

Additionally, the full course load in Medicine makes it difficult to reconcile with paid work.

In light of this situation, the family decided to start an online fundraising campaign to help maintain support during the undergraduate degree.

The crowdfunding began to be promoted following the circulation of the approval video.

In the campaign description, the student indicates that the funds raised will be directed toward staying in Ribeirão Preto throughout the course.

With increased visibility, Wesley reported receiving supportive messages and inquiries from people interested in contributing.

To avoid confusion, he began to clarify that official information about the campaign is concentrated on his social media profiles.

Career Plans and Choice of Medicine

When discussing his career plans, Wesley states he intends to work as a doctor in the healthcare system, focusing on the relationship with patients.

He also mentions future interest in the field of surgery.

The choice of medicine, according to the student, emerged during childhood.

Wesley recounts having faced a chronic respiratory issue as a child, which required frequent medical follow-ups.

The recurring contact with healthcare professionals is said to have influenced his career decision.

After the approval, the student began to direct messages to young people facing similar situations.

In interviews, he emphasized the importance of persisting in studies despite material difficulties.

With the spot secured and the move to the interior of São Paulo planned for the start of the course, the challenge now is to ensure material conditions to remain at the university throughout the coming years.

How to expand student assistance mechanisms so that students accepted into highly competitive courses can complete their degrees without solely relying on fundraising campaigns?
