With Stealth Technology and Domestic Engine, the Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon Is Already the Most Advanced Fighter in China and Changes the Military Balance in Asia
The Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon is the first 5th generation stealth fighter developed by China and represents a historic turning point in the country’s air power. Equipped with advanced sensors, AESA radar, and a range superior to that of Western rivals, it was designed to directly compete with the American F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.
Manufactured by Chengdu Aerospace Corporation, the Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon officially entered service in 2017. Since then, over 200 units have been delivered to the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), consolidating China’s position as a major player in the global military technology scene.
An Ambitious Project to Reach the United States

The Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon emerged with the clear mission of breaking the U.S. air supremacy in the Indo-Pacific. Since its first flight in 2011, the fighter has rapidly evolved, focusing on stealth, beyond visual range (BVR) combat, and network integration. Its design incorporates DSI air intakes (without diverters) and angular surfaces, reducing its radar signature.

An important differentiator of the project is the adoption of domestic WS-10C engines, with thrust vectoring in the latest versions. The next evolution — the WS-15 engine — promises to deliver true supercruise (sustained supersonic flight without afterburner), something that would definitely place it on par with the F-22.
Specifications and Technical Capabilities of the Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon
- Estimated Maximum Speed: Mach 2.2
- Combat Radius: 1,100 km (up to 2,700 km with external tanks)
- Operating Altitude: up to 20,000 meters
- Maximum Payload: up to 11,000 kg
- Armaments: PL-10 and PL-15 missiles, Beidou guided bombs, KD-88

Additionally, the Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon does not have an internal cannon, adopting a total stealth philosophy, based on long-range strikes before the enemy detects it. Its cockpit interface is modern, featuring MFD displays, color HUD, and a helmet with integrated aiming.
Strategic Comparison and Challenges in the Air
Although the Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon still faces limitations in maneuverability compared to the F-22, its advantage lies in flight range and the ability to carry long-range missiles, such as the PL-15, capable of engaging targets over 200 km away. This makes it an ideal platform for broad area air defense and access denial.
Another key point is the integration of electronic warfare and sensor fusion. It operates collaboratively with drones, AWACS systems, and command centers, enhancing its situational awareness. This reinforces the network warfare doctrine adopted by China.
Accelerated Production and Expansion to New Variants
According to data from FlightGlobal and Chinese military reports, the Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon has already surpassed 200 operational units. Production continues at a high pace, with two-seat and navalized versions in development. The two-seat version will be able to operate as a tactical control center for drones in combat, in line with the new tactics of the Chinese Army.
In the long term, the goal is to integrate the J-20 with joint operations involving hypersonic missiles and surveillance satellites, further expanding its strategic role.
