Chinese Hybrid Engine Achieves Record Efficiency and Reinforces Global Technology Dispute Among Manufacturers, with Advanced Solutions in Combustion, Thermal Management, and Loss Reduction, Placing Dongfeng at the Center of the Debate on Innovation in Hybrid Systems for Mass Production.

Dongfeng Motor announced in China a new gasoline engine geared toward hybrid systems, the Mach 1.5T, with a maximum declared thermal efficiency of 48.09% and local energy performance certification known as “Energy Efficiency Star.”

The index, released by the company in statements reported by Chinese media, is presented as the first in the country to surpass the 48% mark in a hybrid engine intended for mass production.

In practice, thermal efficiency indicates how much of the fuel’s energy is converted into useful work at the engine’s output, rather than being lost as heat and friction.

The higher the number, the less energy waste there tends to be, which translates into lower consumption when the system is well calibrated to operate in the ranges where it performs best.

Record Thermal Efficiency and Certification in China

The announcement of the Mach 1.5T was published in the Chinese press in early December 2025, along with the information that Dongfeng received the “Energy Efficiency Star” label linked to the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), an entity that conducts testing and certifications in the automotive sector in the country.

In materials released regarding this coverage, Dongfeng claims that the engine maintains over 50% of its operational time within a high-efficiency range, which is important in hybrids that can “force” the engine to operate with loads and speeds more favorable to consumption, while the electric part covers moments of low efficiency.

The manufacturer also links the advancement to an increase in range under equivalent fuel conditions, with a 10% increase in autonomy, according to the company itself.

These percentages, it is worth reinforcing, are manufacturer statements and usually depend on the vehicle, the hybrid strategy, and the testing cycle adopted.

Advanced Combustion and Precise Air Management

To justify the performance, Dongfeng associates the result with a set of changes in the combustion process and in the control of intake and valves.

One of the points mentioned is the compression ratio above 15.5:1, a high standard for a gasoline turbo engine that requires strict control of detonation and temperature, in addition to a very well-defined combustion strategy.

Another highlighted element is the high-energy ignition system and, primarily, the high-pressure direct injection, around 500 bar, described as a resource to accelerate and make the combustion within the cylinder more complete.

Generally speaking, higher pressures can improve fuel atomization, helping to form a more homogeneous mixture and reduce losses associated with incomplete combustion.

Still, the final effect depends on the chamber design, electronic management, and the fuel used.

On the air flow side, Dongfeng mentions a variable geometry turbocharger adjusted for hybrid application, electric and continuous variable control, and the adoption of a valveless seat design, where the sealing area is treated differently to reduce components and favor performance under specific operating conditions.

Reduction of Mechanical Losses and Thermal Control

In addition to burning better, the engine needs to waste less energy internally to transform the gain into measured efficiency.

In this sense, Dongfeng points to an integrated electric oil pump and the use of thermal spray coatings in the cylinders as measures aimed at reducing mechanical losses and improving thermal control.

The coverage of the announcement also mentions over ten additional innovations related to the integration of the system and the reduction of friction.

According to Dongfeng, this technical package extends the time the engine remains in the zone of maximum performance.

The strategy takes advantage of a typical hybrid characteristic, which is the ability to turn the engine on and off according to demand and to choose more efficient moments for operating at higher loads.

Direct Comparison with Toyota and BYD

The race for thermal efficiency in gasoline engines for hybrids has intensified in recent years, especially in China.

Toyota, a historical reference in this type of system, reports engines that achieve around 40% thermal efficiency in gasoline versions and 41% in hybrid applications, according to the brand’s institutional information on the Dynamic Force family.

BYD, in turn, claims that the Xiaoyun 1.5L hybrid engine associated with Super DM technology achieves 43.04% thermal efficiency, according to publicly released materials from the company.

Recent reports and announcements also mention advancements in the 46% range in Chinese engines presented throughout 2024.

It is in this context that Dongfeng positions the Mach 1.5T.

By declaring 48.09% maximum thermal efficiency, the company places its engine above the levels publicly attributed to Toyota and BYD in corporate disclosures and specialized reports.

Nevertheless, direct comparison requires caution, as maximum thermal efficiency represents a peak obtained under specific load and speed conditions, not the average consumption in real-world use.

Impact of Chinese Advancement on the Global Automotive Scenario

The importance of an engine with high thermal efficiency goes beyond an isolated technical number.

In markets where hybrids and plug-in hybrids advance as an intermediate alternative between traditional combustion vehicles and electric ones, efficiency gains reduce consumption and emissions in everyday use.

This movement also highlights a structural change in the Chinese industry.

Local manufacturers have ceased to act solely as followers of foreign solutions and have begun to compete for leadership in powertrain engineering, driven by stricter environmental standards, intense internal competition, and pressure for innovation.

Whether Dongfeng will be able to bring the Mach 1.5T to high-volume vehicles while maintaining costs, durability, and performance compatible with the technical promise is something that should become clearer when the first models equipped with the engine hit the market and are evaluated by independent tests.

Until then, what is publicly available is a combination of official statements from the brand and the certification mentioned in the Chinese announcement.

In a sector where every tenth of a percent of efficiency can transform into competitive and regulatory advantage, it remains to be seen which manufacturer will be able to take the next technological leap and establish a new benchmark for mass-produced hybrid engines.
