Slab Gave Way During the Morning in Campos Elíseos
According to the Fire Department, the property located on Rua Urussaí suffered a sudden structural collapse.
The slab gave way while the residents were asleep, preventing any escape attempts. As a result, the debris buried the three people who were inside the house.
Although the municipality registered rain hours before, the Duque de Caxias City Hall reported that, so far, it has not identified a direct link between the collapse and the weather conditions on Friday (23).
Therefore, technicians are analyzing other hypotheses.
Rescue Involved About 40 Firefighters
The rescue operation in Campos Elíseos involved about 40 firefighters from five different units of the Fire Department.
The teams worked throughout the night amid unstable debris and used specialized search and rescue techniques to locate the victims.
During the action, firefighters rescued Jeremias dos Santos Silva, 25 years old, a woman identified only as Luana, and the family pet.
However, the teams found the 11-year-old girl already deceased among the rubble.
Victims Were in Severe Condition When Taken to Hospital
After the rescue, firefighters took the victims in severe condition to the Adão Pereira Nunes Municipal Hospital, also in Duque de Caxias.
According to the hospital administration, Jeremias arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest and did not survive despite resuscitation attempts.
Luana suffered abrasions on her face, arms, and legs. Furthermore, imaging tests pointed to fractures in the cervical region and ankle.
The medical team is keeping the patient hospitalized under intensive care, and her clinical condition is concerning.
The professionals have sent the child’s body to the Medical-Legal Institute (IML) of Duque de Caxias for legal procedures.
Civil Defense Assesses Risks After the Collapse
After the rescue, the Fire Department summoned the Municipal Civil Defense of Duque de Caxias to assess the remaining structure of the property and verify the possibility of further collapses in the area.
Technicians conducted preventive inspections to ensure the safety of residents in neighboring houses.
The Civil Defense also reported that it did not receive prior requests to inspect the property, underscoring the need for a detailed investigation into the structural conditions of the house.
Reports Indicate Abandoned Property
According to the Duque de Caxias City Hall, neighbors reported that the property had been abandoned before the family moved in.
This information has become part of the investigation, as buildings without proper maintenance often present a high structural risk.
Nonetheless, the municipal administration highlighted that it has not yet confirmed the circumstances of the occupation or the property’s maintenance history.
Police Investigates Responsibilities
The 60th Police Station (Duque de Caxias) is investigating the case.
The forensic examination conducted the initial assessments at the site right after the rescue, and investigators are continuing their efforts to clarify the causes of the collapse in Campos Elíseos.
In the meantime, authorities emphasize the importance of notifying the Civil Defense whenever signs of structural risk emerge in properties, especially in old or abandoned constructions.
