Presented in 1994 as a replacement for the Chevette, a success with more than 1 million units produced in 20 years, the Chevrolet Corsa had a rounded style, modernity and good construction level, which served as the basis for one of the most respected sports cars on the national market, the Corsa GSI.

Caught lightly disguised driving around the capital of São Paulo, it was featured on the cover of the September 1994 edition and its first official appearance took place the following month, during the 18th edition of the São Paulo Motor Show. The Chevrolet car was the newest member of the GSi sports series, started by the Kadett mid-size hatchback and reinforced the previous year by the Vectra sedan.

General Motors knew that the fight would be fierce in the hatches, disputed by the new VW Gol GTi and Ford Escort XR3 and led by the Fiat Uno Turbo. Chevrolet's popular car did not disappoint and was powered by the 16 Ecotec X1.6XE engine, with four valves per cylinder, sequential multipoint electronic injection and a compression ratio of 10,5:1. Imported from Hungary, it produced 14,8 kgfm at 4.000 rpm and 108 hp at 6.200 RPM.

Even though it doesn't seem like much, it was enough to take the 945 kg Chevrolet Corsa GSI from 0 to 100 km/h in just 11 seconds, surpassing the famous Gol GTi of the time. Its aerodynamic coefficient (Cx) was 0,34, allowing the popular Chevrolet car to reach a remarkable 195,2 km/h in fifth gear. Its drivability was favored by the closed gearing of the F15 gearbox and the elasticity of the engine, with 80% of the maximum torque present from 1.500 RPM.

Chevrolet Corsa GSi still beats rivals in 2024

The high performance of the engine of Chevrolet's popular car was also evident in its average fuel consumption of 14,1 km/l. Light and aerodynamic, the Chevrolet Corsa GSi achieved 12,7 km/l in the city and 15,8 km/l on the highway, unusual averages for a sports car. Even with a tank of only 46 liters, the Chevrolet Corsa was a great road car, with a range of over 700 km.

Sober and discreet, its external appearance consisted of moldings on the fenders, bumpers, side skirts, rear-view mirrors, front grille and rear spoiler painted in the body color: Bach Red, Gris Yellow, Mahler White and Liszt Black (solid) or Goya Red, West Green and Rodin Silver (metallic).

The sportiness was highlighted by fog lights, 14-inch alloy wheels, 185/60 tires, exclusive exhaust tip, rubber deflector on the lower part of the front bumper and version emblems.

What is the interior of a Chevrolet car like?

The velvety interior upholstery with red stripes extended to the seats with open headrests, the front ones with pronounced side supports. Behind the three-spoke steering wheel of the popular Chevrolet car, which was covered in leather, was the tachometer with a red scale starting at 6.500 RPM and the speedometer marking up to 220 km/h.

Comfort was guaranteed by air conditioning and fast-ratio power steering, with less than three turns from lock to lock. It is worth noting that, despite its undeniable virtues, Chevrolet's popular car was unable to overcome its greatest enemy: its high price.

The sports car cost the equivalent of three Corsa Wind 1.0 and was therefore offered in just two model years: 1995 and 1996.

What a report! It deserves an Oscar, for its futility!

Advertisement for an old car that is no longer in production. Joy for mechanics and owners who want to sell their vehicles.
