Based on Recent Data, the Survey Revealed That the Safest City in the Northeast Maintains Declining Crime Rates, Becoming a Reference for Peace and Quality of Life
Located in the metropolitan region of São Luís, Maranhão, São José de Ribamar has just achieved an impressive title: it was elected the Safest City in the Northeast according to the 2024 ranking from the MySide platform, which evaluated crime indicators across the country. The survey considered homicide data per group of 100,000 inhabitants, highlighting the Maranhão municipality as a regional standout, with a rate of only 8.7 — one of the lowest in Brazil.
The study analyzed dozens of medium and large-sized cities in the Northeast, taking into account the number of intentional violent deaths (IVDs), as well as the ratio between population and recorded incidents. In this context, São José de Ribamar, with about 250,000 inhabitants, showed results superior to traditional capitals and well-known tourist hubs, establishing itself as a reference in public safety in the region.
Local authorities attribute the good performance to investments in surveillance, an increase in police forces, and community prevention programs. Additionally, the municipality has invested in urban infrastructure and public lighting, factors that contribute to reducing crime and enhancing the sense of security among residents and visitors.

Despite significant advances, experts warn that the title of Safest City in the Northeast does not mean a total absence of crime. There are specific challenges, especially in peripheral areas, where cases of theft and domestic violence are still recorded. Nevertheless, the homicide rate well below the national average reinforces the perception that São José de Ribamar is today a positive example for other Northeastern cities seeking to strengthen security policies and improve the quality of life for their populations.
