Want To Escape IPVA 2026 Without Giving Up Your Car? Check Out Five Cheap, Used Cars Over 20 Years Old That Are Already On The List Of IPVA-Exempt Cars And Still Fit In Your Budget.

Every start of the year brings the same headache: IPVA bills arriving, even when the car has been paid for years. The good news is that it is indeed possible to lighten or even eliminate this expense legally. In much of Brazil, vehicles over 20 years old qualify for IPVA exemption, which makes a big difference in the budget. Even better: the beloved Brazilian cars Fiat Palio, Celta, Gol, Honda Fit, and EcoSport – the reliable cheap cars that are easy to maintain and cost little in the used market.

Thinking ahead to IPVA 2026, we gathered five models that remain rational choices for those looking to save without being stranded.

IPVA Exemption: How It Works Today In Brazil

Currently, most Brazilian states grant automatic IPVA exemption for vehicles over 20 years old. This criterion, although not identical across the country, is the most widely adopted. States like São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Paraná follow this rule, while others apply different limits.

In 2024, the Chamber of Deputies approved a project that standardizes this exemption at the national level, which reinforces the trend that old cars will continue to be tax-free in the coming years. According to the Chamber, the proposal aims to “correct distortions and provide more predictability to taxpayers.”

The values mentioned below were obtained from real ads on Mercado Livre, considering December 2025, and may vary by state, condition, and version.

1. Fiat Palio: Simple, Durable And Cheap To Maintain

The Fiat Palio remains one of the most sought-after cars when it comes to economy. Models from the second generation or the first facelift launched in 2001 already qualify for exemption.

The 1.0 Fire engine delivers about 65 hp and 9.5 kgfm of torque, always with a five-speed manual transmission known for its durability.

With a length of 3.84 meters and a wheelbase of 2.37 meters, the Palio is compact and easy to use in urban traffic. On Mercado Livre, prices start at approximately R$ 11,900, usually in the EX version.

Depending on the unit, there may be power steering, front electric windows, and even air conditioning. For those looking for cheap cars and IPVA exemption, it remains a logical choice.

2. Celta: Low Fuel Consumption And Simple Mechanics

The Celta of the first generation was designed to be light, economical, and easy to maintain — and it continues to fulfill this role well. The 1.0 VHC engine produces about 70 hp and 9.0 kgfm, always paired with a five-speed manual transmission.

With just over 3.75 meters in length and a wheelbase of 2.44 meters, it performs very well in urban settings.

In the used market, ads start from R$ 12,900, especially highlighting the Spirit version, which usually offers electric windows and locks.

Exempt from tax, the Celta remains an entry point for those seeking a functional car without budget shocks.

3. Gol “Bola”: Durability That Transcends Generations

The Gol G2, popularly known as “Gol Bola,” is almost a national treasure. The Special 1.0 version features an engine of about 67 hp and 9.3 kgfm, always with a five-speed manual transmission. The design is simple but extremely robust.

At 3.93 meters long and with a 2.47-meter wheelbase, it provides decent space for four adults.

On Mercado Livre, prices also start around R$ 12,900. Power steering and air conditioning are present in many units.

The abundant supply of parts and cheap labor helps explain why the Gol remains popular among the most sought-after IPVA-exempt cars.

4. Honda Fit: More Expensive, Yet More Refined

Those willing to invest a little more will find the first generation Honda Fit to be an above-average option. The 1.4 engine delivers about 83 hp and 12.3 kgfm, with a five-speed manual or automatic CVT transmission in some versions.

At 3.83 meters long and with a wheelbase of 2.45 meters, the Fit stands out for its intelligent use of internal space, thanks to the central tank and foldable seats.

On Mercado Livre, ads start at R$ 25,900, usually for the LX version, which already includes air conditioning, power steering, and electric windows and locks. IPVA-free, the Honda Fit is recommended for those who value reliability and versatility.

5. EcoSport: Elevated Position And More Versatile Use

The first generation EcoSport marked the beginning of compact SUVs in Brazil. In the XLT 1.6 version, the engine produces about 95 hp and 14.5 kgfm, always with a five-speed manual transmission.

With a length of 4.23 meters, a wheelbase of 2.49 meters, and raised suspension, it offers a high driving position and greater tolerance for bumpy streets. Prices start around R$ 28,900 on Mercado Livre.

Air conditioning, power steering, and electric windows and locks are part of the package. For those looking to move away from hatchbacks without facing the IPVA, the EcoSport remains an interesting alternative.

Is It Worth Considering This For IPVA 2026?

Experts in automotive economics point out that exemption has a significant impact on the total cost of ownership. In recent interviews with the press, industry analysts remind us that “IPVA represents one of the largest fixed expenses of car ownership throughout the year, especially for those who drive less.”

This logic explains why the search for IPVA-exempt cars tends to grow as IPVA 2026 approaches.

If the goal is to reduce expenses without sacrificing mobility, these five models show that it is possible to combine low prices, known mechanics, and zero taxes. Evaluating the condition and provenance is essential, but the annual savings often compensate.
