Ford Announces Destination of Troller Factory. With a New Multi-Brand Production Model, the Plant Could Generate Jobs and Economic Development.
The suspense has come to an end, but not without leaving many questions in the air. Since Ford ended its vehicle production in Brazil in 2021, a puzzle lingered over the fate of the Troller factory in Ceará.
With a prolonged negotiation full of twists and turns, the automaker finally revealed the next chapter of this story. But what exactly is in store for this plant?
And, most importantly, does this mean new job opportunities for Brazilians?

At the end of 2021, Ford permanently closed the Horizonte (CE) factory, where the iconic Troller T4 and TX4 jeeps were produced.
This decision left many fans and workers in a mix of nostalgia and concern.
Troller, a genuinely Brazilian brand that emerged in 1997 and was acquired by Ford in 2007, ceased its activities in the country after years of production dedicated to off-road enthusiasts.
According to Ford, the Camaçari (BA) plant has already been transferred to the Chinese BYD, but the fate of the Ceará unit remained a mystery.
Now, in September 2024, a new chapter begins. Ford and the Government of Ceará have finally reached an agreement, and the Horizonte factory will be transferred to the state.
According to the automaker’s statement, the transaction marks an important step for the economic and social recovery of the region, but there are still uncertainties about the jobs this change may generate.
An Unexpected Ending for Troller
In October 2021, the production of Troller T4 and TX4 models was permanently halted. The last vehicle to come off the assembly line was a TX4 with white paint and blue details.
Equipped with a 3.2 turbo diesel engine, the jeep featured 4×4 traction and automatic transmission, along with a host of attributes that made it a favorite among adventurers.
However, despite its popularity, the TX4’s life was short: launched in January 2020, it remained on the market for just a little over a year.
The Horizonte factory, capable of producing robust vehicles ready to tackle tough terrain, is now set to transform.
However, there is still no clarity on how this change will directly affect workers and the local economy.
According to the Government of Ceará, the plant will be used to foster a new automotive production model in the country.
What’s Next?
The company Comexport, specialized in foreign trade, has already shown interest in the Horizonte plant.
According to information released in August 2024, the project involves investments of R$ 400 million and plans to assemble at least six different models of electric and hybrid vehicles.
According to the Ceará government, the idea is innovative: the factory will operate as a multi-brand automotive plant, producing vehicles for different automakers that do not require a complete structure.
This business model allows companies to outsource production, using only the necessary assembly lines. This could mean a unique opportunity for smaller companies or those starting their operations in the country.
However, the big question remains: how many direct and indirect jobs will be generated with this new endeavor?
A New Era for the Automotive Industry in Brazil?
The Horizonte plant has the potential to become a reference center for the production of electric and hybrid vehicles in Brazil.
With the growing demand for more sustainable vehicles, this could be a crucial step for the modernization of the national automotive industry. However, there are still many doubts about how this will be reflected in the local and national economy.
The multi-brand production could be a trend that will revolutionize the sector in the country. According to experts, this model could facilitate the entry of new automakers and reduce production costs, making the Brazilian market more competitive. However, it is still early to say whether this will be the future of factories in Brazil.
The Future of Workers
Despite the good news about the reuse of the plant, many still wonder: how many jobs will be created?
The Troller factory, in its heyday, employed hundreds of people directly and significantly contributed to the local economy.
Now, with the proposal for a diversified production focused on electric vehicles, the expectation is that new jobs will be generated, but still without concrete guarantees.
The Ceará community is still anxiously awaiting more definitive answers. The agreement between Ford and the Government of Ceará is undoubtedly an important step, but it is not enough to quell the anxiety of workers and their families.
According to the governor, the goal is to attract more investments and transform the region into a cutting-edge automotive industrial hub.
And you, what do you think?
Will this new automotive production model really bring jobs and development to Ceará, or will we still see many challenges ahead? Share your opinion in the comments!
