With New GE Factory of R$ 430 Million, Rio de Janeiro Will Double Engine Maintenance to 1,200 Per Year and Establishes Itself as a Global Aviation Hub.

The Rio de Janeiro is establishing itself as one of the most strategic centers of global aviation. GE Aerospace, through its subsidiary GE Celma, has decided to unprecedentedly expand its presence in the state with a R$ 430 million investment in the construction of a new factory in Três Rios, 70 kilometers from Petrópolis, where it already operates one of the largest maintenance, repair, and overhaul units for aircraft engines on the planet.

The decision is not casual. Today, the Petrópolis plant overhauls about 600 engines per year, servicing companies from various continents. The new unit will allow Rio to achieve an unprecedented capacity: 1,200 engines overhauled annually, doubling its participation in the global MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) chain. This will enable Brazil to move from being just a regional player to becoming a global hub, dubbed by industry executives as the “world’s aircraft engine workshop”.

The Importance of the R$ 430 Million Investment

The amount announced by GE Aerospace reflects confidence in the already established structure in Rio. The plant in Três Rios, set to begin operations in 2026, will feature cutting-edge technology to handle next-generation engines, such as the CFM LEAP and GEnx, used in modern Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

With this investment, GE not only increases capacity but also creates about 500 new direct and indirect jobs in the region.

This multiplier effect reinforces the economic relevance of aviation for the state of Rio de Janeiro, which now integrates a select group of locations worldwide capable of performing complex maintenance on state-of-the-art engines.

GE Aerospace and the Role of Rio in the Global Chain

GE Celma is already recognized as one of the largest MRO units of GE Aerospace outside the United States.

In Petrópolis, engines from companies such as Ryanair, Azul, Gol, Latam, and Lufthansa undergo complete disassembly, inspection, parts replacement, and certification testing.

With the arrival of the new unit in Três Rios, Rio positions itself even more strongly on the world aviation map.

While other countries compete to attract assembly factories, Brazil has gained prominence in an often invisible but absolutely vital sector: aviation maintenance, responsible for ensuring the safety of thousands of daily flights.

Rio de Janeiro as an MRO Hub

The global MRO market moves over US$ 80 billion per year and is dominated by major hubs in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

The definitive entry of Rio de Janeiro into this global circuit represents a leap in competitiveness.

According to industry projections, the global fleet of commercial aircraft is expected to grow by about 3% per year until 2040, driving demand for maintenance.

Brazil, by its strategic position in Latin America and established infrastructure, becomes a reference for companies seeking efficiency and quality in engine overhauls.

Why Was Rio Chosen?

Experts point to three central reasons for GE’s decision:

  • Proven track record of excellence in Petrópolis, which already operates as one of the most efficient factories in GE’s global network.
  • Geographical and logistical proximity, with easy access to the Port of Rio de Janeiro, Galeão Airport, and highways that facilitate the transport of heavy engines.
  • Qualified workforce, partly formed by centers such as the Aeronautics Technological Institute (ITA) and local universities.

This combination has ensured the state the necessary confidence to receive an investment of this magnitude in a strategic and highly competitive sector.
