The specifications of the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max have been leaked, and the highlight is a dual 200 MP camera with a new 22-nanometer technology that promises to consume less energy and capture details in shadows and bright areas using LOFIC HDR.
This engine is not an AI agent, like Apple’s Siri or Google Gemini, but a framework that standardizes agentic AI applications, a new approach that allows mobile devices to learn and plan actions with greater autonomy.
According to Finbarr Moynihan, vice president of corporate marketing at MediaTek, the evolution of AI in mobile devices is advancing rapidly.
In recent years, AI has been used to enhance photography, but now, with the introduction of generative AI, the focus is on creating more engaging and interactive experiences.
Moynihan emphasizes that the industry is entering a new phase where AI should be more accessible and useful to the consumer.
The Dimensity Agentic AI Engine facilitates this transition, making it possible to create custom AI agents and advanced applications, providing a smoother and more intuitive interaction between users and their devices.
Enhanced Performance and Energy Efficiency
In addition to AI-related improvements, the Dimensity 9400 also brings significant advancements in performance.
The chip utilizes a 3 nm manufacturing process, smaller than the 4 nm process of its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300. This results in 35% faster single-thread performance and 28% better multi-core performance, according to benchmark metrics like Geekbench.
Energy efficiency is another highlight. The Dimensity 9400 is 35% more efficient in AI tasks and offers 80% faster response times when processing prompts in large language models.
Moreover, its LPDDR5X memory shows a 25% performance increase with a 25% reduction in energy consumption, providing a more agile and efficient experience for users, especially in tasks involving generative AI, such as image creation via Stable Diffusion.
Elevated Visual and Gaming Features
The gaming audience also has reason to celebrate with the new Dimensity 9400. The 12-core Immortalis G925 GPU, developed by Arm, boasts a 41% performance increase, with ray tracing that is 40% faster and energy savings of 44% compared to the previous model.
This means that games and graphic applications will have much smoother performance with lower battery consumption, which is crucial for ensuring an extended gaming experience without compromising the overall device performance.
Another differentiator of the chip is support for tri-fold displays, an innovation already present in Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Design, which features three foldable screens. This opens the door to the development of new device formats that combine the functionality of a tablet with the portability of a smartphone.
Advanced Audio and Multimodal Capability
MediaTek has also invested in audio processing improvements. The Dimensity 9400 supports up to six microphones and 24-bit audio recording.
Audio-focused AI enhancements promise a more refined experience, with the elimination of unwanted noise and more precise sound capture, similar to what Apple introduced in its selective audio recording modes on the iPhone 16 Pro.
Additionally, the Dimensity 9400 is capable of performing edge multimodal AI, processing over 50 tokens per second, which allows for more agile integration of different forms of interaction, such as voice, image, and text, offering a smoother and more natural user experience.
The rivalry between MediaTek and Qualcomm remains fierce, with both companies competing to equip the most advanced smartphones in the market.
The Dimensity 9400 arrives at a strategic moment, ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S25 series launch and Apple’s announcement of the next generation of its artificial intelligence, Apple Intelligence, which is set to be integrated into the iPhone 16 series.
Although MediaTek has not revealed which manufacturers will use its new chip, there are expectations that brands like Oppo and Vivo may announce devices equipped with the Dimensity 9400 later this year.
This means that soon, consumers will be able to experience the new AI functionalities and performance improvements promised by this next-generation chip.
