Highways will have cameras with Artificial Intelligence capable of identifying infractions such as using a cell phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt. The system assists the Federal Highway Police (PRF) in inspection, aiming to reduce accidents and promote road safety.

Driving on Brazilian highways can become an even more rigorous experience for those who insist on breaking traffic rules.

A new camera monitoring system with Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to identify infractions that previously went unnoticed and intensify monitoring.

Technological advancement has already begun to operate in Minas Gerais and could directly impact driver behavior.

The Eco050 concessionaire announced the installation of new cameras on BR-050, in the most critical sections of the highway, mainly in the urban areas of Uberlândia.

The equipment is capable of identifying drivers using cell phones while driving and passengers not wearing seatbelts.

The expectation is that this innovation will contribute to reducing accidents and increasing road safety.

How the new inspection system works

The system uses high-precision cameras equipped with advanced AI algorithms that capture images in real time.

When an infraction is identified, the information is sent directly to a system integrated with the concessionaires' Operational Control Center (CCO).

Subsequently, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) validates the records and issues notifications to the offending drivers.

According to Eco050, the system began operating in December 2024 and is already showing significant results.

“We recorded an average of 30 infractions per operation, which shows how common these practices are among drivers,” said Bruno Araújo Silva, Operations Manager at Eco050 and Ecovias do Cerrado.

Using a cell phone while driving is one of the main causes of accidents on Brazilian highways.

According to data from the PRF, distraction caused by using a cell phone considerably increases the risk of serious collisions.

Furthermore, the absence of a seat belt increases the impact in the event of an accident, increasing the severity of injuries and the number of deaths.

Expansion of technology and impact on highways

The technology applied to BR-050 could become a reference for other highways in the country.

Eco050 reported that, in the future, the system will also be installed at PRF bases, further facilitating inspection work.

The model adopted on BR-050 has already inspired the expansion of monitoring to other sections, such as the recently initiated use of average speed radars in Uberaba.

For road safety experts, the implementation of these technologies represents a significant advance.

“The main objective is not just to punish offenders, but to educate drivers and create a culture of respect for traffic laws,” Silva highlighted.

The expectation is that, with the intensification of inspections, there will be a change in behavior and a considerable reduction in the number of accidents.

The PRF reinforces the importance of complying with traffic regulations, warning that infractions such as using a cell phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt are considered serious or very serious.

In addition to the penalties provided for in the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), drivers caught in these situations are exposed to risks that can be fatal.

The importance of smart monitoring

AI camera monitoring is part of a global trend towards modernizing road surveillance.

Countries such as Australia and the United Kingdom already use similar systems, with positive results in reducing infractions and accidents.

In Brazil, the adoption of these technologies reflects an effort to keep up with these developments and promote safer traffic.

The combination of technology and active monitoring could represent a game changer in road safety.

With the new system in operation, it is expected that not only will fines be applied, but that drivers will be more aware of the importance of driving responsibly.

Drivers traveling along BR-050 must be aware of the new rules and adopt safer habits.

With reinforced monitoring and the use of Artificial Intelligence, road safety enters a new era, where violations will not go unnoticed and preserving lives will be the priority.

I THINK IT'S CORRECT BUT IT WON'T WORK. THE RIGHT THING WOULD BE TO SEIZE THE VEHICLE AND FINE IT IN THE AMOUNT OF 5 MINIMUM WAGES. THEN YOU WILL STOP USING YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING.

Don't exaggerate, man. And where does the private life of people go inside their cars? Has Brazil now become the Iron Curtain of the Soviet era? What's up? Explain that. Is that constitutional? We don't have a private life anymore, because our CPFs are mandatory for traveling around the world. Explain that, experts...

There is no longer any interest in increasing road safety, but rather in raising money for governments that spend money and abuse citizens. The question is: will the camera distinguish who is using a cell phone inside the vehicle? It seems to me that there is not enough artificial or real intelligence to make such a distinction. This smells like fraud if it is implemented.
