Petrobras increases the workload for employees. See the new rules and how they impact workers.

In a decision that promises to change the routine of its employees, Petrobras announced an increase in the workload of on-site employees. The measure, which aims to optimize management and productivity, will bring significant changes to the hybrid and remote model. Find out how these new rules could impact Brazil's largest state-owned company.

Behind the scenes at Brazil's largest oil company, a controversial decision promises to change the routine of thousands of employees.

While the global market still debates the limits between home office and in-person work, Petrobras goes against many trends by announcing that it will increase the in-person workload of its employees.

In a statement released last Thursday (09), Petrobras made it official that the new work model will come into effect on two different dates: April 7, 2025 for employees without a bonus function and March 10 for those who hold consultant and manager positions.

The main change is the increase in mandatory days of in-person work. Employees will now be required to report to the office at least three times a week., unlike the current model which only requires two days.

This rule has been in effect for managers since September 2024, according to information in the statement.

Impacts on hybrid and remote work

According to O Globo newspaper, Petrobras revealed that employees who opted to reduce their weekly working hours will only be entitled to one day of remote work per week.

For new employees, the request to join the hybrid model will only be allowed after 18 months of full-time in-person work.

Another important point is that only certain specific groups, which already have previously agreed conditions, will continue to benefit from full five-day teleworking.

For others, negotiation of remote days must be done directly with their managers, necessarily considering Monday or Friday as one of the in-person work days.

New mandatory membership

With the changes, all employees interested in the hybrid model will need to sign up again.

The state-owned company said it will also release complete guidelines and deadlines for workers to adapt to the new rules.

Those who do not adhere to the hybrid format will be able to continue working full-time in person.

Petrobras' justifications for the measure

Petrobras highlighted that the expansion of its presence in the workplace seeks to improve management, strengthen integration between teams and increase agility in delivering results.

According to the official statement, the decision is strategic, especially at this time of growth of relevant projects within the company.

The state-owned company also highlighted that, since before the pandemic, it has been monitoring trends and practices related to work models in Brazil and abroad.

The company stated that the pilot project implemented before the health crisis served as a basis for adjustments that seek to meet both the needs of the corporation and the interests of employees.

Impact among employees

Although Petrobras presented arguments justifying the changes, the decision divided opinions among workers.

For many, the flexibility provided by working from home during the pandemic brought benefits such as a better quality of life and time saved on commuting.

On the other hand, advocates of in-person work point to gains in collaboration and productivity.

On social media and internal groups, some employees expressed concerns about the logistics of adaptation, especially for those who live far from the company's headquarters.

There are also questions about the financial impact caused by increased travel and the need for family reorganization.

Next Steps

Petrobras said it will detail the procedures in future announcements and plans to offer support to workers to facilitate the transition to the new model.

The state-owned company reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a efficient and balanced work environment, even in the midst of significant adjustments like this one.

This increase in the on-site workload at Petrobras reflects a strategic choice that aims to optimize corporate processes and results.

Despite the challenges, the state-owned company believes that the measure will strengthen its operations and internal integration. How do you evaluate this change? Leave your opinion in the comments!
