During the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, the president of Honda announced that hybrids will dominate the brand’s global strategy until 2030, while electric vehicles will continue to be developed at a more cautious pace.
Honda decided to revise its global strategy for the coming years, prioritizing hybrid vehicles until the end of the decade. This measure comes after a slowdown in sales of fully electric cars, which did not meet the optimistic projections of recent years.
During the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda Motor Company’s Director and President, Toshihoro Mibe, stated that the global electric market is approximately five years behind initial forecasts.
Mibe acknowledged that while electric vehicles are not advancing at the expected pace, hybrids have been consistently gaining ground. “The electric vehicle market is slowing down more than anticipated; we can say it is about five years behind projections. However, the sales volume of hybrid cars is increasing, and we continue to develop hybrid technology,” he stated.

Focus on Developing New Hybrids
Within this new direction, Honda is investing in technologies that make its hybrids more efficient. The company is developing a hybrid system 90 kg lighter and with lower fuel consumption, which will be applied, among others, to the brand’s best-selling model.
The plan is to launch a completely new version of the mid-size hybrid in 2027, as well as expand the portfolio to small, medium, and large vehicles.
“We plan to offer an enhanced version of our mid-size hybrid in 2027. Once we achieve this goal, we will be able to offer hybrids of all sizes, and they will continue to evolve in the future,” explained Mibe.
Electric Vehicles Remain on Honda’s Radar
Despite the prioritization of hybrids, the company reaffirms that it is not abandoning 100% electric vehicles. According to Mibe, the focus is to adjust expectations and investments to the real pace of the market. “We are not reducing the development of our fully electric vehicles; rather, compared to our initial projections, the amount will be smaller than we had anticipated. The electric vehicle remains the ideal solution,” he stated.
Honda will continue to invest in research and development of electric vehicles, including Series 0, a platform created exclusively for this category. The company is also working on a new generation of electric platforms, which should incorporate more advanced technologies in the coming years.
Two Technologies, One Future
For Mibe, Honda will enter the coming years supported by two technological pillars. “We believe that electric and hybrid vehicles will be the two pillars that will drive Honda’s automotive business,” he declared.
The executive foresees that by 2030, the company will surpass two million hybrid units sold globally.
As the electric market does not reach maturity, Honda bets on a gradual transition, combining energy efficiency and commercial adaptation. “In the future, electric vehicles will be the solution, but until then we need to adopt a more realistic approach from a commercial standpoint,” concluded Mibe.
