The course combines theoretical subjects, practical activities, seminars, technical visits, and the development of a final project.
Classes in Manguinhos and 390-Hour Workload
The in-person activities take place at the Fiocruz campus in Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro, generally on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9 am to 5 pm, with the possibility of activities at other times due to the academic schedule and partnerships with external institutions.
The minimum workload is 390 in-person hours, fulfilled throughout modules that structure the training in scientific communication.
At the end of the course, students must present a Final Project (TCC), which can be a thesis on a topic related to the communication and popularization of science or the development of a product or process for scientific communication, accompanied by an analytical report.
Target Audience of the Specialization
Candidates with a recognized higher education diploma by the MEC, regardless of their field of study, can register.
The target audience is broad and multidisciplinary, encompassing professionals such as journalists and other communicators, scientists, science teachers, museum and science center educators, museologists, sociologists, scenographers, and cultural producers.
The proposal of the specialization aims to bring together this diverse set of backgrounds, favoring the exchange of experiences between those coming from academic research, formal and informal education, communication, or cultural production.
The training is aimed at both those interested in practical activities and those who wish to deepen their academic reflection on scientific communication and popularization.
Available Spots and Affirmative Actions
For the class starting in 2026, 20 spots are offered, all free of charge.
There are no application, enrollment, or tuition fees.
The selection process adopts a policy of affirmative actions, reserving spots for people with disabilities, black candidates (both black and brown), and indigenous candidates, following the criteria defined in the announcement.
Steps of the Selection Process
The selection is conducted entirely online, in successive stages.
First, there is the validation of applications, a phase in which the coordination verifies if all the required documentation was sent on time and according to the guidelines in the announcement.
Next, there is the document analysis, an eliminatory and classificatory stage that considers the letter of intent, the pre-project, and the candidates’ resumes.
Finally, approved candidates from the document phase are invited for an online interview, conducted via videoconference.
This conversation allows for a deeper exploration of points from the pre-project, clarification of aspects of the professional trajectory, and verification of the candidate’s availability to participate in in-person activities.
Registrations for the 2026 Class
For the 2026 class, the registration period and document submission is from November 19, 2025, to January 16, 2026, entirely online.
The final classification of approved candidates is scheduled to be announced on February 27, 2026.
In-person classes take place in Manguinhos and extend throughout the academic year, ending in the second semester.
The submission of the Final Project occurs later, following a schedule defined in the announcement.
How to Register for the Fiocruz Specialization
The registration must be done in two complementary stages. First, the candidate needs to fill out the registration form on the Fiocruz SIGA Platform, selecting the Specialization course in Science Communication and Popularization.
Then, it is necessary to send all the required documentation in digital format to the email specified in the selection process announcement.
Among the requested documents are the diploma or declaration of graduation completion, academic transcript, resume, letter of intent, and pre-project of research or product in scientific communication.
In cases of applications for affirmative action spots, there are specific forms and verifications provided in the announcement.
