IBAMA identified an oil leak near the Stella Banner oil tanker, which is sinking off the coast of Maranhão, full of iron ore.

Off the coast of Maranhão, the oil-oiler Stella Banner, flying the South Korean flag, is still stranded and waiting for a solution. The ship, which is loaded with iron ore, left the Ponta da Madeira terminal, heading for the Chinese port of Qingdao, when it suffered damage to the hull. The ship, which is full of iron ore, weighing 294,8 tons, was also fully loaded with oil.

According to Vale, the damage occurred on the bow after the ship left the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal, in São Luís, Maranhão, on Monday night. Vale also informed that the damage occurred outside the access channel to the port.

The MV Stellar Banner, flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, would arrive in China on April 4th. According to the Marine Traffic website, it is 340 meters long, carries 300 thousand tons of ore and was built in 2016.

Four tugboats are on site to provide support. South Korean Polaris Shipping, which owns the vessel, hired Ardent Global to draw up a rescue plan.

This Friday (28), in an overflight of the site, Ibama detected an oil slick with a radius of 830 meters close to the ship. In a note, Ibama informed that there is a thin oil stain, but that it does not know how to say the spilled volume. The vessel is loaded with 4.000 tons of oil.
