Meet the Northern Loop, the Bold £130 Billion Rail Project That Aims to Connect 9 British and Irish Cities in a Super Metropolis.
The President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Chris Williamson, has just launched a proposal that promises to redefine the geography of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Called Northern Loop, the project envisions an ultra-high-speed rail system connecting nine major urban centers, transforming them into a single sprawling but integrated metropolis with over 10 million inhabitants.
An Unprecedented Connectivity Network with High-Speed Train
The proposal suggests that the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Bangor, Dublin, and Belfast be linked by elevated tracks. The goal is to establish a constant flow, with trains every five minutes reaching an impressive 300 mph. With this high-speed train, traveling from Edinburgh to Manchester would be faster than crossing the city of Los Angeles by car.
Inspired by the monumental scale of the The Line project in Saudi Arabia, Williamson argues that the British Isles need a bolder vision. “The government seems to expect each city to compete for the same funding, when we should be encouraging collaboration,” stated the architect.

More than Transportation: An Energy Backbone
The project, which has consulting from Elliott Wood, goes beyond mobility. The Northern Loop has been designed to be a hybrid infrastructure:
- Structure: Elevated tracks over local stone arches to minimize environmental impact on the landscape.
- Energy: The line will serve as a corridor to collect and redistribute energy from wind farms (onshore and offshore) and strategic modular reactors.
- Economy: Estimated at a cost of £130 billion, with an economic return of £12 billion annually through the integration of technical specialization centers.
Overcoming the Trauma of the English Railway Sector
The proposal comes at a delicate moment for British infrastructure. The current HS2 project, which connects London to Birmingham, has faced criticism for delays and exorbitant costs that could reach £80 billion. Williamson believes the Northern Circuit can restore national confidence.
“Great Britain needs a vision that can excite the country and regenerate the economy,” he says. By submitting the plan for the Royal Academy’s 2026 Summer Exhibition, the architect aims to reclaim architecture’s provocative role in shaping the future. If approved and executed, the high-speed train will cease to be just a means of transportation and become the engine of a new era of economic and sustainable cooperation in the British Isles.
