The Ford Motor Company has agreed to pay a fine of up to US$ 165 million, the second largest ever issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), for failing to meet federal recall requirements. U.S. Agency Highlights The Reason For Ford Fine
The agency determined that the automaker failed to conduct a timely recall of vehicles with defective rearview cameras and failed to provide accurate and complete data regarding the process. The investigation focused on the 2020 models, including Ford F-150, Super Duty, Explorer, Mustang, Transit, Expedition, Escape, Ranger, EDGE, and the Lincoln Nautilus and Corsair.

In a statement on November 14, NHTSA’s Deputy Administrator, Sophie Shulman, emphasized the importance of accurate and prompt recalls for road safety, which resulted in Ford’s multi-million dollar fine. According to Shulman, when manufacturers do not prioritize public safety and fail to meet their legal obligations, NHTSA will hold them accountable.
The Ford fine is part of a three-year agreement, requiring an initial payment of US$ 65 million, with an additional US$ 55 million deferred to ensure Ford meets the terms of the agreement.
The remaining US$ 45 million of Ford’s multi-million dollar fine may be used by the company for investment in improvements, including the development of a safety data analysis infrastructure and the creation of a component tracking platform based on the vehicle identification number (VIN).
Brand Statement After Fine
Ford will also build a low-voltage electronics testing laboratory. Furthermore, the brand will review all of its recalls from the past three years and, if necessary, implement new safety measures. The company will also hold quarterly meetings with NHTSA to ensure compliance with requirements.
In a statement regarding the Ford’s multi-million dollar fine, the brand said it is committed to continually improving its safety and compliance processes, with several improvements already underway, including a new internal testing center and advanced data analysis technologies.
The automaker assured that to date, there have been no injuries or fatalities related to the recall that led to Ford’s fine. The automaker has been leading the automotive industry in the number of recalls in the U.S. over the past three years, a trend expected to repeat in 2024, tied with Stellantis, totaling 58 recalls so far. This is the highest amount imposed by the agency since Takata Corp was fined up to US$ 200 million in 2015, due to defective airbag inflators.
Another Controversy Involving Ford
In addition to this multi-million dollar fine from Ford, a controversial saga involving the brand has recently come to an end. The automaker agreed to provide a 10-year warranty to customers who purchased vehicles with EcoBoost engines to conclude an investigation against the brand, due to a faulty part that could cause engine stalling during operation.
Ford has always boasted about its engine, considered revolutionary. The engine features a novelty, utilizing exhaust energy to power the turbo and thus provide more and more power. The problem is that while it is a significant bet for Ford, the engine has also caused headaches for the automaker. There have been numerous reported issues, particularly in recent years and with larger engines.
