Power your home with the electric Chevrolet Silverado! GM bidirectional charger – General Motors Energy innovates with reliable and sustainable energy solution

GM Energy launched a innovative solution which allows owners of General Motors electric vehicles to use their cars as a source of energy for their homes.

This innovation comes as a response to increasing power outages in the United States, offering a reliable and sustainable alternative to keeping your home running.

GM Energy Introduces Two-Way EV Chargers That Let You Power Your Home With One Vehicle

GM Energy's new vehicle-to-home (V2H) chargers allow you to transfer power from a compatible GM electric vehicle directly to a home. This system is not only pioneering in its ability to energy exchange, but it also eliminates the need to install additional battery storage systems at home, an often expensive and complex option.

The first GM – General Motors model compatible with this technology is the Chevrolet Silverado EV 2024, RST edition. This model has an impressive 200 kWh battery pack that can provide an energy flow of up to 10.2 kW, enough to power a home for 21 consecutive days under normal usage conditions.

Availability and costs

GM Energy's V2H package is initially available in five states: California, Florida, Michigan, New York and Texas, with plans to expand to more regions progressively. This package includes the GM Energy Powershift charger at a cost of US$1,699 and the V2H enablement kit for $5,600, excluding installation costs and taxes, which will vary depending on each household's existing configuration.

While the US$7,299 price may seem high, it is competitive compared to other battery storage systems, such as Tesla's Powerwall, which costs US$11,500 with a solar installation.

GM’s future plans and competition – General Motors Energy

By 2026, GM plans to extend V2H bidirectional charging technology to other vehicles based on your Ultium platform, including the 2024 Sierra EV Denali, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac LYRIQ, all 2024 models.

Additionally, select eligible 2024 GM – General Motors vehicles will require a dealer or software update to enable bi-directional charging. GM – General Motors Energy also has plans to bring stationary battery storage and solar integration solutions to market by the end of this year in an effort to compete with companies like Tesla and its Powerwalls.
