Magna's intelligent engine will be launched in 2022 and the brand has already guaranteed that this novelty will increase the autonomy of electric cars by 30%, leaving aside the use of high-power batteries

CES 2022, which took place last week, from January 05 to 08 in Las Vegas, displayed throughout the event the announcement of the launch of Magna's innovative intelligent engine "EtelligentReach", capable of increasing the autonomy of electric cars by 30%. , leaving aside the 'super batteries'. The company developed the entire smart engine system in partnership with LG. According to Magna, this new technology will arrive making a great revolution in electric cars, due to an enabled software that serves to optimize vehicle driving dynamics and energy management.

First tests of the EtelligentReach smart engine

The smart power train features two engines with integrated silicon carbide transmissions and inverters. EtelligentReach was tested on a prototype similar to the Jaguar i-Pace model, which Magna Steyr is responsible for producing, on behalf of Jaguar Cars, at its factory in Graz, Austria.

The control unit carries out all the commands of the dynamic part of the car, having a disconnection function, whose objective is to minimize the loss of energy and the friction. In fact, this guarantees greater autonomy and safety for the vehicle, which, in addition to having two engines, does not require the use of high-power batteries.

The command unit also offers a "longitudinal torque vectoring", which is nothing more than a type of control directed to the traction and grip system on both the front and rear wheels, which is not only active in curves and conventions, as usual, giving the car a safety margin of approximately 10%.

Even if they haven't mentioned the battery capacity yet, the vehicle has, so far, 150 km more compared to what the car without the intelligent engine can offer. Indeed, optimizing the individual components from the control unit is a key part of making this technology possible.

Production of electric cars equipped with new smart motor technology

It is estimated that the production vehicle that will bring the new intelligent engine technology in its grand debut, scheduled for this year of 2022, will be the electric car Fisker Ocean SUV, produced by the Magna Steyr factory, already in the middle of the third quarter of 2022.

The information was given through the announcement made at the CES 2022 event, where technical characteristics compatible with those initially illustrated were given for the graphic and explanatory representation of EtelligentReach.

In addition to other brands, Apple has been very interested in this technology, as it has been looking for partners and suppliers for its Apple Car project for some time, which in 2021 would have been considered to join LG-Magna in a one-on-one possible and future collaboration.
