Amid The Drought And Bank Debts, Community Resident Of Barca Do Juazeiro Digs A Well In Search Of Water, Finds Dark Liquid That Catches Fire And Raises Suspicions Of Oil, While IFCE Analyzes Samples And The Story Spreads Throughout The Backcountry.

The scene begins like so many others in the backcountry: a farmer tired of relying on water trucks decides to dig a well in search of water. But instead of clean water, what emerged from the ground was a thick, black liquid with a strong smell that can catch fire upon contact with a coal. In just a few days, what was only a project to alleviate the drought turned into a suspicion of oil in the community of Barca do Juazeiro in the interior of Ceará.

By the well, with a jar in hand, producer Sidrônio shows the dark liquid that changed his routine. He says that the family has always had difficulty accessing water, took out a loan from a bank to drill the well, and ended up stumbling upon something no one expected. Now, while IFCE analyzes the samples and emphasizes that it is still just a suspicion of oil, the community lives between curiosity, fear, and hope that the discovery brings some kind of real change to the region.

From Water Shortage To Suspicions Of Oil In The Backyard

In the interview, Sidrônio summarizes the starting point without beating around the bush: the priority has always been water, not any other resource.

The family plants beans, corn, and sorghum, raises sheep, and depends on rain and water trucks to keep everything alive. The idea of drilling the well came from long ago, but financial conditions delayed the plan.

When the situation improved a bit, he finally managed to hire a drilling machine. A friend analyzed the land and assured him that there “was water” there. The expectation was simple: to have a well to irrigate the crops and provide water for the animals, reducing dependence on third parties.

Instead, the well became a point of suspicion of oil. What should have been a water relief turned into a technical case, with press visits, explanations from experts, and a new layer of uncertainty about the future of the property.

The First Well: Black Water, Dirty Rod, And Lots Of Doubt

In the first well, drilling advanced to about 39 meters, when dark water began to emerge. For those living with drought, any sign of water is cause for relief, and that’s how Sidrônio reacted: he got excited when he saw the liquid rising, believing he had finally found an underground reservoir.

But the well’s behavior soon began to attract attention. The black water appeared, then stopped. Drilling continued to about 44 meters, hitting a layer of “yellow gravel.” At this point, the farmer ordered the work to stop, thinking there would be no more results.

The detail came next. Whenever the machine withdrew the rod, it came back dirty with something oily. Out of curiosity, Sidrônio ran his hand over the piece and felt the texture of oil.

The machine owner smelled the residue and immediately commented that it seemed like oil, perhaps even oil like petroleum. The reaction was mixed: surprise, disbelief, and the beginning of a suspicion of oil emerging where there had once only been concern about drought.

Washings, Abandonment, And A Second Well That Also Raised Questions

Still suspicious, the group decided to wash the well. A water truck was called, water was poured several times into the hole, and the excess was thrown into the bushes. The goal was to “clean” the place to see if clear water would emerge afterward.

According to the report, even after three washings, what continued to appear instead of water was the same dark oil, reinforcing the doubt about what was down there.

Faced with frustration and no immediate answers, Sidrônio made a practical decision: he abandoned that well and decided to try his luck in another spot on the property.

In the second well, drilling reached about 18 meters with signs of “wet stone dust,” which for him indicated a possibility of water. However, as drilling continued, black stones similar to those from the first well began to appear, causing him to suspect that the story might repeat itself.

He ordered the work to stop around 24 meters, judging that it would not be worth continuing. Once again, the search for water collided with strange signs that gradually fueled the suspicion of oil.

Water That Disappears In Summer And The Return To The Forgotten Well

After some time, this second well managed to supply a “little water” during the winter, enough to motivate the farmer again.

He installed a pump, managed to pull water, and used the resource for a while. But when summer arrived, the harsh reality of the backcountry imposed itself: the water disappeared, limited to small underground cavities.

Disheartened, Sidrônio decided to leave the well alone for a year. During this time, the family continued to face the routine of water shortages, relying on water trucks and neighbors’ help. The priority returned to survival, not investigating the source of the strange liquid from the first hole.

It was only at the insistence of his children that the story took a turn. They asked for a thin nylon line and improvised a kind of cup to test, once again, what was inside that forgotten well.

When the cup came up, the surprise: instead of water, a volume of dark oil came up. From then on, the suspicion of oil ceased to be just a casual comment from the machine operator and became a hypothesis taken more seriously within the family itself.

The Fire Test And The Spark Of Oil Suspicions

With the dark liquid in hand, the test was straightforward. They put a little of the material in a container, brought a coal close, and observed the reaction. According to Sidrônio’s account, the oil caught fire, something that immediately reinforced the idea that it could be some form of a petroleum derivative.

Even without technical training, the reasoning is simple: if it’s dark, viscous, has a strong smell, and catches fire, it could be oil. From that point on, the suspicion of oil began to be openly mentioned among family members, neighbors, and later, by those who visited the site.

Beyond the video and curiosity, this moment marks a turning point in the community’s perception. The well that previously represented only frustration from the lack of water became seen as a possible hidden treasure, even though no one knew exactly what to do with it.

IFCE Enters The Story: Sample Analysis And Caution

The link between the backcountry and technical analysis came through one of Sidrônio’s sons, Saulo, who lives in Limoeiro and keeps in touch with people linked to the IFCE. When the family reported the situation, the guidance was clear: it was necessary to take a sample of the liquid for analysis.

They collected the dark oil, sent it to the institute, and from there, the case began to be studied. According to the farmer, IFCE sent an initial response stating that it could indeed “be oil”, but emphasizing that the studies continue.

At this point, an essential aspect comes into play: for now, there is only a suspicion of oil, not an official confirmation of a commercial reserve or exploitation viability.

The very way the story is conveyed makes it clear that the competent authorities still need to deepen the analyses to determine exactly what that material is.

Debts, Bank Of The Northeast, And The Weight Of Waiting

YouTube Video

Behind the curiosity surrounding the suspicion of oil, there lies a harsh reality: the debt incurred in an attempt to obtain water. Sidrônio says he took out a loan from the Bank of the Northeast to drill the well and that the initial result left him in a complicated situation.

Without enough water to make the crop more productive, he began selling animals to pay the installments, until he reached a point where he could no longer meet the commitment.

After discussing with the bank management, he managed to gain some breathing room, but the tension remains. While the backcountry continues to rely on water trucks and favors to ensure water, the farmer lives divided between the concern over bills and the hope that the suspicion of oil opens some door of opportunity.

He remembers that water continues to be essential, both for the family and for the animals, and that no possible discovery replaces this basic need.

Even so, he admits he dreams of the chance to be helped by authorities, deputies, or institutions, should the suspicion prove true and the place gain greater relevance.

Community in Shock And Expectation In The Backcountry

The discovery of the black liquid that catches fire shocked the community. In a context where everyone’s struggle is for water, suddenly something that could have economic and scientific value emerges.

Videos showing the jar, the fire test, and Sidrônio’s account have spread, and the story went viral throughout the backcountry, attracting curious visitors and raising debates about what could happen if the suspicion is confirmed.

At the same time, the sense of vulnerability persists. Without official confirmation, infrastructure, and clear policies, the community knows that there is a long distance between finding something in the backyard and turning it into a real benefit.

While the IFCE continues analyzing the samples and treating the case as a suspicion of oil, Sidrônio goes on with his life: taking care of the crops, the animals, the bills, and a jar of dark liquid that, for now, symbolizes both the lack of water and the possibility of a different future.

And you, if you found a dark liquid that catches fire while digging a well in the backcountry, what would be your first reaction: to think of water, of wealth, or to call a specialist to confirm this suspicion of oil?
