Company Offers Paid Plan and Two Free Options for Those Who Need More Time Before Migrating to Windows 11

Microsoft has officially announced new ways to extend security support for Windows 10. The system will be discontinued on October 14, 2025.

The company has released three alternatives for home users. One is paid and two are free.

The measure aims to assist those who are not yet ready to migrate to Windows 11.

End of Windows 10 Support Approaches

Since Microsoft announced the end of the Windows 10 lifecycle, many users are looking for alternatives.

The deadline is set for October 14, 2025.

From that moment on, the system will continue to function normally. However, it will no longer receive security updates and functional improvements.

For this reason, in 2024, Microsoft created the Extended Security Updates (ESU) package.

This initiative will allow home users to extend support for critical updates until October 13, 2026.

This benefit, however, will be limited to just one year. There will be no possibility of renewal.

Paid Plan Offers One Year of Extra Security

For those seeking a straightforward solution, Microsoft has launched an individual plan for US$30.

The amount is equivalent to about R$165 in direct conversion, which may vary depending on the country.

This plan provides critical updates for one year, exclusively between October 15, 2025, and October 13, 2026.

However, the coverage does not include new features or visual enhancements.

This option is already available for participants in the Windows Insider testing program.

The company will release the activation assistant to the general public starting July 10, 2025.

Free Options Involve Microsoft’s Own Programs

For those looking to extend security without paying, Microsoft has announced two free options.

The first involves Windows Backup, a native tool of the operating system.

It allows users to save files and settings to OneDrive or compatible cloud services.

Users who enable this feature will be able to participate in the ESU program for free.

This proposal aims to assist those who need to migrate to Windows 11 and also replace their computer.

The second free option is linked to Microsoft Rewards, the company’s loyalty program.

It rewards users for activities performed on Bing, Edge, Xbox, and Microsoft Store services.

Those who accumulate at least 1,000 points can exchange them for free access to the ESU.

Activation of Options Starts in July 2025

Microsoft confirmed that users will be able to activate all alternatives directly on Windows 10.

This will happen starting July 10, 2025, via notifications or the settings menu.

ESU coverage will be valid for twelve months: from October 15, 2025, to October 13, 2026.

Only home users will have access to the free options.

Businesses can also join the ESU. In this case, the cost will be US$61 per computer.

The company may renew this corporate plan annually for up to three years.

The subscription cost, however, will increase with each renewal.

Safe Transition Before the Definitive Arrival of Windows 11

Although support for Windows 10 has ended, the three alternatives offered ensure security during this important transition period.

Therefore, Microsoft recognizes that many users will still need more time to complete the migration to the new operating system.

Additionally, the company shows ongoing concern for keeping its customers protected until the full migration is completed.

Thus, by integrating ESU with Windows Backup and Microsoft Rewards, the company encourages the use of its own services.

This way, it strengthens its digital ecosystem and keeps users loyal to the official brand platform.

Even so, the official recommendation remains: migrate to Windows 11 as soon as possible.

After all, only the new system will continue to receive ongoing updates, in addition to essential technological innovations for digital security.

If the change needs to be postponed, it is possible to plan the best path based on the options suggested by Microsoft.

And you, faced with so many alternatives, have you decided which one you will choose to stay secure after 2025?
