With Almost the Entire Matrix Formed by Clean Sources, Piauí Advances in Solar and Wind Parks, Expands Renewable Generation and Confirms a Highlighted Position in the Energy Transition and in the Sustainable Development of the Country
Piauí has increased its presence in the national renewable energy scenario because data from the National Electric Energy Agency and Brazilian solar and wind energy associations confirm consistent advancements.
The state occupies the 1st place in the country for renewable electrical matrix, in addition to the 3rd place in centralized solar energy production by 2025 and wind energy by 2023. With 99.75% of its matrix formed by clean sources, Piauí reinforces its potential to drive the energy transition in Brazil.
The positive indices represent the state’s commitment to decarbonization and show how sustainable development is linked to the region’s natural characteristics.

Researchers discover a possible hydrogen deposit of up to 46 million tons beneath an ancient coal basin, and the volume could exceed half of the entire global production.
The composition of the matrix confirms Piauí’s growing prominence in the sector and strengthens its position as a national reference in clean energies.
Advancement of Solar Energy in the State
Piauí is located in the Brazilian solar belt, considered one of the most favorable areas in the world for photovoltaic generation.
The state has an average irradiation of 5.9 kWh per square meter and approximately 12 hours of daily sunlight, surpassing countries like Germany and even the national average. These factors explain the strong expansion of centralized solar plants.
Currently, Piauí ranks 3rd in the national ranking for installed capacity in centralized solar plants, trailing only Minas Gerais and Bahia by 2025.
Among the highlights is the São Gonçalo Solar Park, in São Gonçalo do Gurguéia, the largest project of its kind under construction in South America. With ongoing expansion, the park will reach 864 MW of installed capacity in an area of about 12 million square meters, equivalent to 1,500 football fields.
National Highlight in Wind Energy
Piauí also ranks 3rd in wind energy generation in 2023, reaching 12.82 TWh and surpassing traditional states in the sector, such as Ceará and Rio Grande do Sul.
The efficiency of the plants reinforces this advancement, as the state registers an average capacity factor of 38.6%, occupying the 5th position in Brazil during the same period, which confirms the competitiveness of local generation.
The state is home to the Lagoa dos Ventos Wind Farm, the largest in Latin America, consisting of 230 turbines and 1,063 MW of installed capacity. The park generates 3.3 TWh per year and avoids the emission of 1.6 million tons of CO₂, directly contributing to environmental goals.
Projections and Renewable Potential
Piauí remains one of the most strategic states in the country for renewable energies.
The solar and wind potential, combined with an almost entirely clean electrical matrix, positions the state as a reference in energy transition, decarbonization, and sustainable development. These conditions reflect the local capacity to efficiently harness its natural wealth and geographical advantages.
