Oil and natural gas production in Brazil broke historic records in September, with pre-salt oil playing a major role. The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) released a report that reveals impressive figures: pre-salt oil accounted for no less than 81,2% of all national production. This level not only marks a new record, but also reinforces the central role of pre-salt oil in the country's energy production.
According to the ANP's September bulletin, pre-salt oil and natural gas production reached a surprising 3,681 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), the highest volume ever recorded. This robust performance represented a growth of 6,3% compared to the previous month and 2,4% compared to September 2023. With 153 wells in operation, daily extraction totaled 2,864 million barrels of oil and 129,90 million cubic meters of natural gas.
Ao observe national production as a whole, adding up all exploration areas, oil and natural gas production reached 4,539 million boe/d, demonstrating the importance of pre-salt in the total. The 81,2% share of pre-salt is a sign that exploration in deep and ultra-deep waters has consolidated itself as one of the pillars of the country's energy production.
Pre-salt: Natural gas also breaks record in September
The natural gas sector also celebrated impressive results, with an average production of 169,92 million cubic meters per day (mยณ/d). This represents a jump of 6,4% compared to August 2024 and 7,6% compared to September 2023.

Of this total, 56,87 million cubic meters per day were made available to the market, while gas flaring totaled 3,63 million mยณ/day. With a utilization rate of 97,9%, gas utilization is on the rise, even with a slight increase of 0,6% in burning compared to the previous month and 8,3% compared to the same period last year.
National oil also shows an increase compared to August
In terms of oil production, the numbers are also impressive. Daily national oil production in September totaled 3,470 million barrels (bbl/d), which represents a growth of 3,9% compared to the previous month. However, there was a slight decrease of 5,5% when compared to September of the previous year, 2023, which does not diminish the prominence of the sector as a whole.
Those results indicate a trajectory of expansion and maturity of oil and natural gas production in the pre-salt layer, highlighting the continued importance of this area for energy security and the national economy. With these new records, the pre-salt layer reaffirms its strategic and vital role for Brazil's energy future.
