The alliance between Russia and China once again demonstrated its military strength this week. After the President of the United States Donald Trump threatened Moscow with the deployment of nuclear submarines, the two allied countries conducted a joint anti-submarine exercise in the Sea of Japan, simulating the detection and destruction of an enemy submerged.
According to a statement from the Russian Pacific Fleet, the training involved wild helicopters, patrol planes, and a submarine rescue ship from China, and it reportedly concluded successfully with the elimination of the “hostile target” during the simulation. Although classified as a “defensive” maneuver, the exercise occurs at a time of high tension with the United States, and it is interpreted as a direct response to the rhetoric escalated by Trump.

The action is interpreted as a symbolic response to the threat made by Trump last Friday (1st). In a public statement, the American president declared that “two nuclear submarines” were being deployed to an unspecified region, following a virtual disagreement with Dmitri Medvedev, former president of Russia and current hardliner advisor to the Putin government.
Medvedev had reacted to criticisms made by Trump regarding the Russian economy, mocking with a reference to the Perimeter system known as “dead hand” that allows for the automatic launch of Russian nuclear missiles in the event of a devastating attack.
What Are the Geopolitical Implications of the Alliance Between Russia and China?
The military exercise this week reinforces the strategic cooperation established between Putin and Xi Jinping days before the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Since then, the two countries have intensified joint naval and aerial operations, often with nuclear bombers, and now focusing on anti-submarine operations.
The West watches these movements with concern. NATO has already warned of the possibility of coordinated military actions between Moscow and Beijing, while the Pentagon speculates about a scenario in which North Korea, also an ally, joins the bloc, increasing the risk of escalation with the use of tactical nuclear weapons.
What Happens From Now On?
At the end of the exercise on Wednesday, the Russian Pacific Fleet announced that a joint force of Russian and Chinese ships will continue patrolling the Pacific Ocean. Although the maneuvers are overt, the governments of both countries emphasize that they are routine defensive actions.
However, analysts believe that the timing of the operation, so close to Trump’s statement and the deadline for a supposed truce in the Ukraine War (expected for Friday, 8), indicates a strategic alert and a clear message to the West.
