Viral Discussion About A Fight Between 100 Men And A Gorilla Raises Curiosity On Social Media, But Experts Warn Of The Real Challenge: Preventing The Extinction Of The Species.

A curious debate has dominated social media in recent days: could one hundred men defeat a gorilla in a fight?

The question was posted on X (formerly Twitter) on April 24, quickly spreading across Reddit, Facebook, TikTok, and other platforms.

Despite the absurd tone, the discussion has taken on giant proportions over the past few days, complete with memes, simulations, and serious opinions.

The idea is not new. In 2020, Reddit users had already raised the scenario, detailing conditions for a supposed battle between humans and a gorilla.

But the resurgence of the question in 2024 reignited the topic, provoking an avalanche of posts and reactions, divided between humor, curiosity, and technical arguments.

Animal Strength Under Debate

With the growth of the discussion, experts decided to comment on the case.

Tara Stoinski, president of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, gave an interview to USA Today, explaining that gorilla strength may be overestimated.

According to her, many exaggerations circulate on social media, such as the claim that a gorilla is “25 times stronger than a human”.

I really wonder if these numbers are based on anything concrete,” she stated. Stoinski acknowledged that gorillas are very strong, but believes that the numerical advantage and teamwork of humans could change the course of the fight.

The Real Strength Of A Gorilla

Scientific studies and field observations suggest that an adult gorilla can be four to nine times stronger than an average human, depending on the type of physical activity involved.

This estimate is based on biomechanical analyses and comparisons with other great primates, such as chimpanzees, which have been shown to be up to twice as strong as humans in controlled tests (Journal of Experimental Biology, 192(3), 1998).

In the case of gorillas, their sheer strength is impressive: some experts estimate that a silverback gorilla could lift up to 1800 kg in pulling or lifting strength, although these data are not from direct laboratory measurements, but rather from theoretical modeling and indirect evidence collected by primatologists.

In addition to absolute strength, anatomical and muscular factors reinforce this physical advantage of gorillas. According to primatologist John Bauman, PhD in biomechanics, gorillas have predominantly type II muscle fibers, responsible for quick and powerful contractions, as well as a significantly greater muscle density than humans.

Their quadrupedal locomotion also provides more efficient mechanical leverage for pushing, pulling, and climbing, enhancing their capacity to generate force.

Publications from BBC Earth and National Geographic also point out that their lower center of gravity and longer upper limbs give gorillas a natural biomechanical advantage, making them one of the strongest animals on the planet relative to their body weight.

Estimated Comparison

Characteristic Gorilla Average Human
Sheer Strength (Push/Pull) 4–9x Greater
Relative Muscle Mass Much Greater Lesser
Estimated Lifting Up to 1800 kg (not confirmed in laboratory) 100–200 kg (trained)

Human Advantage In Strategy

The scientist highlighted two factors that favor humans: endurance and cooperation. If it’s a long battle, humans can take turns. Their endurance will be greater than that of a gorilla alone, who could fight for hours, she said.

Biologist Kaleb Judd also weighed in on the topic.

In a post dated April 27, he wrote that although casualties would be inevitable, the one hundred men could win with strategy and coordination.

These analyses, even in a purely hypothetical scenario, show how collective human behavior still surprises compared to the brute physical strength of other animals.

The Fight That Really Matters

Amidst the viralization, Stoinski took the opportunity to shift the focus of the conversation. For her, the real battle is not against gorillas — it’s for their preservation. “The real fight is for the survival of the species,” she stated.

Today, many species of gorillas are critically endangered. Habitat loss due to deforestation, mining, and agriculture puts these animals at constant risk. And, according to Stoinski, the image of aggressive and dangerous creatures does not reflect reality.

“The myth about them being brutish and violent is unfair. That is not the true personality of gorillas,” she asserted.

While the 100 against 1 debate continues to entertain the internet, experts hope the topic helps remind what really matters.

The question is not whether one hundred men could defeat a gorilla, but whether we can protect these animals before they disappear from the planet.
