The new giant LNG car transport ship will be a record holder both in size, energy efficiency and capacity of vehicles transported
Naval architecture company Deltamarin has just received Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV for its ambitious car and truck transport ship project, achieving the grandiose milestone of 11.000 pure CEU vehicles (PCTCs). These monstrous LNG-powered vessels not only break records, but promise to redefine the limits of market of car carriers with its revolutionary energy efficiency.
Powered by green technology, ships from Deltamarin are true symbols of energy efficiency. With excellent EEDI performance, these giants of the seas feature innovations such as solar panels, waste heat recovery and air lubrication, promoting cleaner and more sustainable navigation.
The operation of an LNG-powered ship
Transport ships powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) operate using engines that burn this clean and efficient fuel. LNG is obtained from cooling natural gas at temperatures extremely low, transforming it into a liquid state and reducing its volume significantly to facilitate storage and transport.

In LNG engines, the fuel is vaporized back to a gaseous state before ignition, generating more complete and efficient combustion compared to other traditional fuels. This process results in substantially lower emissions of atmospheric pollutants, contributing to more sustainable navigation and in line with the growing demands for environmentally friendly practices in the shipping industry. Furthermore, the use of LNG provides additional benefits such as reduced operating costs and compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
Race towards the giant ocean
In collaboration with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing), Deltamarin, affiliated with China Merchants Group, is leading the race to a new standard in car carrier ships. While Hoegh Autoliners' Horizon class, with its 8.500 CEUs, currently reigns, the Aurora class ship, with a capacity of 9.100 CEUs, is about to exceed all limits.
In a bold move, Seaspan Corporation enters the car carrier market, ordering an impressive series of PCTCs with a capacity of 10.800 CEUs, deliveries of which are scheduled for starting in 2027. These giant sea carriers will be leased on a long-term basis to the Hyundai Glovis, marking an innovative turnaround in the industry.
The growing demand for vehicle transporters
The spotlight turns to these new ships at a time when the industry is facing growing litigation over financial security, especially after high-profile incidents involving PCTCs. In parallel, the growing demand for transporters of electric vehicles drives this wave of transformation. As the seas bear witness to these technological marvels, the industry prepares for a new era, facing challenges as it sails towards a revolutionary future.
