With The Support Of Laser Satellites, Study Reveals That Climate Change And Polar Melting Accelerate Sea Level Rise Worldwide.

Sea level rise is accelerating globally, driven mainly by polar melting and the loss of land ice, according to a 30-year analysis conducted by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The survey examined data collected globally between 1993 and 2022 through laser satellites that measure variations in the Earth’s gravity.

The objective was to understand how and why oceans are rising ever more quickly — and the results reinforce the central role of climate change in this process.

According to the study, the global average sea level rose about 90 millimeters during the analyzed period.

The average annual rate was 3.3 millimeters, with more intense acceleration in recent years. This means that the advance of the waters not only continues but gains speed.

Sea Level Rise: Numbers That Worry Scientists

The data shows that approximately 60% of the sea level rise recorded in the last three decades is related to the increase in ocean mass.

In simple terms, this means that more water is being added to the seas.

This increase occurs mainly due to polar melting and the loss of land ice.

Mountain glaciers and large ice sheets are releasing ever larger volumes of freshwater into the oceans.

As a result, the global level rises consistently.

Additionally, since 2005, the contribution of melted ice has become the main driver of this increase.

Greenland, for example, has played a decisive role in this scenario.

Polar Melting Now Accounts For The Largest Share Of Increases

The survey indicates that more than 80% of the gain in ocean mass is directly linked to the loss of polar ice and glaciers around the world.

This data highlights an important change in the behavior of sea level rise.

In previous decades, thermal expansion — when water expands as it warms — had a similar weight.

However, currently, polar melting has consolidated itself as the main factor.

This movement is directly associated with climate change.

The increase in the planet’s average temperature accelerates melting in sensitive areas, such as the Arctic and mountainous regions.

How Laser Satellites Measure Sea Level Rise

To reach such detailed conclusions, researchers used an advanced technology known as SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging).

This is a system that utilizes laser satellites to measure, with extreme precision, small variations in the Earth’s gravitational field.

These variations help identify changes in the planet’s mass distribution.

When large volumes of land ice melt and begin to integrate into the oceans, there is a detectable change in gravity.

Additionally, the team applied a new mathematical model that enhances the spatial resolution of the measurements.

As a result, it was possible to refine the analysis and obtain more reliable results regarding sea level rise.

Climate Change And The Impact Of Land Ice

The role of land ice is central to this process.

Unlike ice that is already floating in the sea, such as sea ice, ice that is on continents, when it melts, directly adds water to the oceans.

Therefore, polar melting has a direct effect on sea level rise.

This phenomenon is one of the most visible signs of ongoing climate change.

Meanwhile, coastal communities around the world are closely monitoring the reported figures.

The acceleration of sea level rise increases risks of erosion, flooding, and extreme events.

Long-Term Monitoring Is Essential

The analysis of three decades demonstrates the importance of maintaining continuous monitoring.

The longer the historical data series, the more precise the understanding of global trends.

In this context, laser satellites represent a strategic tool.

They allow for near-real-time tracking of the impact of polar melting and climate change on the oceans.

This enables scientists to project future scenarios with greater confidence.

And, given the confirmed acceleration of sea level rise, the warning is clear: understanding the behavior of land ice today is crucial to prepare the world for the challenges of the coming decades.
