The P-78 Platform Hits First Oil in December 2025, Consolidating Seatrium’s Expansion in Complete EPCC Projects for FPSOs Destined for Petrobras
Seatrium announced a significant advancement in its global operations. On December 31, 2025, the FPSO P-78 achieved first oil production, thus consolidating the group’s capabilities in complete EPCC, including the offshore commissioning of FPSO units. This result marks a new technical milestone for the company.
Additionally, the P-78 was contracted in 2021 and represents the first of six units in the P-Series built by Seatrium for Petrobras. In this context, the start of production symbolizes the final stage of offshore commissioning, immediately preceding the vessel’s final acceptance by the client. At the same time, the P-78 consolidates as the 37th FPSO delivered by Seatrium to Petrobras, reinforcing a long-term partnership.
According to Marlin Khiew, Executive Vice President of Seatrium Energy for the Americas, first oil was reached in record time. According to the executive, this performance directly reflects the efficiency of the One Seatrium Global Delivery Model, which integrates international operations and allows progress according to client demands. Furthermore, the project reinforces the company’s commitment to operational safety, productive efficiency, and technical quality, central pillars of the group.

In this regard, Seatrium highlighted that the experiences gained with the P-78 are being progressively applied to the other projects in the P-80, P-82, P-83, P-84, and P-85 series. Thus, each new unit incorporates innovative and sustainable solutions, aligned with Petrobras’s decarbonization strategy, as per practices already disclosed by the company.
To enable this milestone, Seatrium fully utilized the One Seatrium model, mobilizing shipyards and teams in Brazil, China, and Singapore. As a result, the FPSO was safely towed to the Búzios field, already equipped with the main maritime and production systems operational, which consequently allowed for a quicker start of offshore activities.
Currently, the P-78 is installed in the Búzios field, located in the Santos Basin, approximately 180 to 230 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The field is considered one of the largest deepwater projects in the world. The unit operates permanently anchored at approximately 2,100 meters depth, through a spread mooring system.
From a technical standpoint, the P-78 was designed to produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil per day and about 7.2 million cubic meters of gas daily. Additionally, the platform has a minimum storage capacity of 2 million barrels of crude oil, positioning it among the largest FPSOs ever delivered to Brazil.
Complementarily, the FPSOs from the P-Series incorporate green technologies, such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), allowing for the separation and reinjection of carbon into the reservoir. Moreover, the units feature thermal energy recovery systems, waste heat and gas, as well as seawater degassing, thus reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
Finally, the six FPSOs of the P-Series will collectively add approximately 1.305 million barrels per day to the national oil production capacity. This volume strengthens Brazilian production and, simultaneously, is expected to generate more than 60,000 jobs, especially in the regions where Seatrium’s Brazilian shipyards operate, promoting local content, professional qualification, and long-term industrial development.
