HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Leads Project for Unmanned Naval Vessel for the South Korean Navy, Using Artificial Intelligence and Electric Propulsion to Modernize.
A new era for naval operations in South Korea is about to begin. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) has been selected by the South Korean Navy to lead the conceptual design of a unmanned surface combat vessel — a strategic step towards modernizing the country’s naval defense. The announcement was made on April 22, 2025, marking a milestone for the military and technology sector in the region.
The initiative aims to prepare South Korea to effectively address the challenges posed by a reduction in troop numbers and the rise of threats in the maritime environment over the coming decades. Under the leadership of HD HHI, there is an expectation that the vessel will start taking shape later this year.
Uncrewed Combat Technology
Designed to undertake reconnaissance and combat missions in high-risk areas, the new unmanned vessel promises to replace manned ships in certain situations, providing greater safety and efficiency.

With a length of 121 meters and four rigid sails of 36 meters that automatically rotate to capture the wind, Canopée is the world’s first hybrid industrial cargo ship powered by wind, used to transport rockets and reduce fuel consumption by up to 30% on transoceanic routes.
The South Korean Navy aims to incorporate autonomous operations into its strategic arsenal.
The project, which will officially commence with a meeting at the end of April, is expected to be completed by December 2025.
During this period, the technical requirements for the vessel, the technologies to be applied, and the acquisition strategies for the program will be defined.
Autonomy, Artificial Intelligence, and Electric Propulsion
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries aims to go beyond the conventional. The vessel will be equipped with artificial intelligence systems, autonomous technologies, and electric propulsion — a combination designed to offer high performance with lower operational costs.
According to the company, the goal is to deliver a “reliable and economical” solution for the South Korean Navy’s operations.
Moreover, HD HHI is not alone in this endeavor. The South Korean company has recently established agreements with two American giants: Anduril Industries and Palantir Technologies.
Together, they will collaborate on the global development and implementation of unmanned surface vessels.
Long-Term Vision: An Autonomous Naval Command by 2040
This project is just the tip of the iceberg. The South Korean Navy has ambitious plans for the coming decades, including the establishment of an unmanned maritime command by 2040.
This strategy seeks to compensate for the reduction in military personnel and ensure that the country remains at the forefront of defense technologies.
