A new era for naval operations in South Korea is about to begin. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) has been selected by the South Korean Navy to lead the conceptual design of a unmanned surface combat vessel — a strategic step towards modernizing the country’s naval defense. The announcement was made on April 22, 2025, marking a milestone for the military and technology sector in the region.
The initiative aims to prepare South Korea to effectively address the challenges posed by a reduction in troop numbers and the rise of threats in the maritime environment over the coming decades. Under the leadership of HD HHI, there is an expectation that the vessel will start taking shape later this year.
Uncrewed Combat Technology
Designed to undertake reconnaissance and combat missions in high-risk areas, the new unmanned vessel promises to replace manned ships in certain situations, providing greater safety and efficiency.

According to the company, the goal is to deliver a “reliable and economical” solution for the South Korean Navy’s operations.
Moreover, HD HHI is not alone in this endeavor. The South Korean company has recently established agreements with two American giants: Anduril Industries and Palantir Technologies.
Together, they will collaborate on the global development and implementation of unmanned surface vessels.
Long-Term Vision: An Autonomous Naval Command by 2040
This project is just the tip of the iceberg. The South Korean Navy has ambitious plans for the coming decades, including the establishment of an unmanned maritime command by 2040.
This strategy seeks to compensate for the reduction in military personnel and ensure that the country remains at the forefront of defense technologies.
